Project 59 Ludwig

Loading...

So...I picked up a 59 Ludwig bass drum, rack tom and floor tom yesterday for $100...and for the condition, I may have been ripped off...but I don't care. This will be my first full resto, so it'll be fun. I have a couple of questions for you guys...

Does anyone know of an outfit that came with a 14x22 bass drum, 8x12 rack tom and 16x16 floor tom? The bass drum and rack tom are both stamped DEC 10 1958, but no stamp on the floor tom.

The most obvious thing to notice is the funky rewrap job, incorrect cymbal arm mounts and stupid tom mounts added...so they will most definitely be getting some holes plugged and a rewrap job. As you can tell on the rack tom...some of the wrap is ripped off...does anyone know of a good way to get the glue off of the shell?

I'm going to be posting pics along the way...but I have a long way to go and am going to take my time. Oh yeah...and I will definitely be asking for advice!

Waaaw,... that's what I call a challenge.

Nevertheless, a super kit and for that price, you can't go wrong.

Already an idea for the re-wrap finish ?

I never had to remove glue form a shell so can't help you there.

Keep those pictures coming !

You got an awesome deal for $100! First step i would recomend you take all lugs and hardware off the drums so it's just wood. Depending on the condition of the metal I would recommend you use double zero or triple zero steal wool to get it all clean. I like taking all the legs and what nnot to be able to lok at the shell wrap more thoroughly. I've never replaced the wrap so sorry i can't help you with that sorry

Looks like a Camco snap in key holder on the 12"!

I would pull that rare baby out,and plug the hole!

Looks like maybe one too on the 16" FT!

Thanks for the replies. I've done some chrome clean before up on my '63 Super Classic...so that part's the least of my worries. I'm assuming once I rip the wrap off (with tons of residual glue stuck on the shells) I will probably have to sand them down to get to the wood. Blair...I don't believe those are not key holders...they are breather holes...which unfortunately replaced the transition badges. The tom holder holes will be plugged and since the stock tom holder holes are already plugged and a re-wrap is in order...not sure if I'm going to leave the rack tom and bass drums as virgins or look for the stock tom holder setup. This one had the 2-hole hot dog holder. I'm also thinking of leaving the cymbal arm holders...as I love using them! BDP will be my wrap of choice....but as I mentioned...this is going to be a slow build, so things may change. I actually need to shelf it for a while to work on some other projects I never finished....but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to pick up this kit. I also have a '64 Cadillac Coupe DeVille that needs some attention...

Blair...maybe you are right...maybe that's what these are. Would there be a special key that would fit in there? Anyone have any pics of a Camco key holder? I've never seen one.
