Paul McCartney's Drummer Last viewed: 7 seconds ago

Loading...

Anyone catch the Grammy awards last night?

McCartney, Joe Walsh and some other great guitarists played "The End" from Abbey Road. What are your thoughts on the interpretation?

Here's mine. Paul had his old or new guitar which of course sounded great. Whether vintage or not I could not tell.

Here's my critique. "The End" (original studio version) featured Ringo in THE major drum solo of his Beatles career (we know he hated to solo), which led into revolving two bar guitar solos by Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, This was replicated last night with a spate of seven guitarists being extended somewhat from the original. The problem was the drummer. Mind you, he is good. This is not a difficult drum solo as many of you have banged it out on your own kits with ease :) Last night the drummmer played, performed well, but he was not featured at all. In fact he back-flipped off the stage to get out of the spot-light.

His drum kit was a monster DW that had no resemblance whatsoever with Ringo's Ludwig kit.

I know the original was done in the studio with no concert tour whatsoever. Would it not have been cool though, to have had this wonderful bit of musical lore played on a nice Ludwig BOP fab-four kit, feature the drummer for that bit and not have him do a back flip off the stage at the end to get rid of him?

Opinions?

Wasn't Abe playing with Paul?

Abe is far from unknown. He and his dad have done a few little gigs.

Oops sorry, My bad. Abe it is. Abe was in no way featured and why not replicate the Ludwig kit in original Beatles hits on stage? My beef here is instrumentation. Sure the tune can be played on a massive DW kit but to what end? Paul wanted his original guitar sound, why not the the vintage Ludwig sound from the drums to really make that solo resonate as it should?

I think it was Abe. I also thought it was too many guitarists soloing; not enough time for each. ( 3 seconds for you, then 2 seconds for him, then 4...)

It was Abe Laboriel, Jr. Heck of a drummer and a very nice guy in person. Had the chance to chat with him at NAMM in 2011. Very happy soul.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

My apologies. Abe was quite well featured, having just re-watched the video. Just wondering about vintage intstrumentation for this? The massive DW kit sounds great but...Paul had his old guitar...Joe Walsh, Springsteen same thing? Why not the vintage ludwig kit?

I don't have TV so I didn't see the show. For what it's worth ... I agree with you. I've always felt that the vibe is lost when a drummer does not hold true to the original. Imagine some poor schmuck whacking away on a seven piece Pearl green stained maple kit behind the Stones. Just odd.

True, unless the artist tells you differently. The interpretation lands squarely on Paul's shoulders, not Abe's. If Abe played something different and Paul didn't say anything, it's Paul's call. If Paul told Abe many years ago to play something similar but not exact, that's also Paul's call.

If it was me on that gig, I would start out playing those parts note for note... until Paul told me not to: "Who do you think you are lad, Richie?"

The other thing to consider is that if Ringo was playing that, the parts would likely not be exactly the same, either.

I watched the YouTube clip, all I can say is that kick sounded atrocious. Click click click... really Abe?? Paul?? DW?? Grammy sound guy on perhaps the most important gig around???

love it, fact of the matter is this… if Abe was up there pounding on a cute little downbeat kit it would in no realistic way make it through the whole song. Abe is a seriously hard player, much harder than you can probably imagine. he goes through multiple snare drums a gig, let alone 60's mounting hardware and spurs. but yes they should have gave abe more love

I was hoping to at least see a modern Ludwig kit with the script logo head (like my 2006 Classic Maple kit). People often ask me what year it is, thinking it was vintage. I have to admit I was a little disappointed to see the DW kit...
