Old Ludwig’s

I’m gonna pull the hardware soon and I’ll find out what’s under there and report back. But white seems like it will match better than its current situation. I mean since it’s going under the knife per se. I also notice the current legacy ludwigs (3 ply ) have 30 degree bearing edge ... is that what these drums had from the factory. Last we’re these maple blend or mahogany ?

Haven’t pulled it off yet but it looks like white is keeping through at the seems so I’m gonna say they are white. I believe them to all be mahogany then. So with this knowledge I think I will have them painted white to match its brothers. The 18 and 13 drums I will leave original white.

Interesting. Didn’t see this before but the 18 has a cut and paste job on the wrap. What I find interesting is seems original or at least it seems to be under the other larger wrapped section. I would almost be sure this is factory.

A bit of rash by the one floor Tom leg. Also the 18 reso side rim is pretty rough.

Today I sent my 13 off to be worked on with a wood worker that does a lot of drums in for the main Austin area drum store. Sent him with instructions that the drum was originally 30 degrees and so from what I learned here to make it like it was. (I’m trying to keep this as original as possible). He sent me photos back once he got to it and said “ I’ll make it 30 if you want that but it’s 45 now “. He sent the photo of the 13. I told him to keep it as close to original as he can.

I stripped the 18 down and everything is in a million pieces. The shell cleaned up good. It was very “green” by comparison of the 13. But after 2 -3 coats of headlight fog remover (chemical guys) I got it very close to the area that was under the lugs.

To be continued.

Wow! The more I see, the more I believe! The vintage edges that I THOUGHT were always 30 degree bevels....are turning out to look like 45 degree bevels, instead. VERY interesting! (to me) lol!

Here is the 18 cleaned up. I need to find a muffle for this one to make it complete. I just received the 18 reso side large lugs for this also. May come together quicker than I think.

I will also need to figure out what the original bass tuner handles are. I have a few different ones.

But the real hang up it seems will be the rims. There is two online but man they are chewed up.

Haven't read the whole thread - but how the 18 inch wrapped is original. Ludwig use to do this on 18 inch floor toms.

Man thanks for the info. I didn’t know that. I’m learning a lot about this old kit.

Can someone lead me to some nylon washers (black) that will work with this kit. (Link please )

Think I’ll do that to prevent some metal contact and bag the originals for the future.

The twin seams on the 18" floor tom are the result of the wrap being a standard 24"x54". Unfortunately, the circumference of an 18" floor tom is about 56-1/2" and you need a lap too. So they did 18 floor toms with an extra piece and two seams. The extra piece is fairly wide because you don't want to try to do it with a little bacon strip.
