Hello and heres my project! 69 Ludwig Silver Sparkle

Loading...

First of all, hello! This is my first post.

I was at a friends house this weekend an noticed a dilapidated set under a pile of crap in his garage.

When I inquired about them he told me:

"A friend found them on the curb in downtown St. Louis about a year ago, Im not going to do anything with them, you want them?" Eye Ball

Of course I said yes, figuring I could beat on em and use them as a spare set.

Got home added them to my existing (yet borrowed) kit and played them.

Then went to bed,

Next day, got up and played some more, noticed they smelled a bit "ripe". Ran the serial numbers on the off the old keystone Ludwig tags and whats this..they're 42 years old! Cool1

The floor tom ended up being a later olive/blue tag model. But its still solid!

I spent the next 6 hours disassembling and cleaning them up. They are gorgeous!

Im getting new heads for them today and am adding as many vintage silver sparkle drums as I can find.

Now the pics:

Before, dirty, nasty, smelly

Good job on the cleaning! It's amazing what a little elbow grease can do!

Cheers

6 hours of work to remove 42 years of gunk and grime.

SO worth it.

What did you use to remove the rust? And/or polish the chrome with? I just checked out all the other pics on flikr it's amazing how well they turned out!

thanks!

I sat down with a tub of warm water and pine sol, some scrubbers (nylon brush, scotchbrite pad, wash rag) and went to town.

The actual rust is still there and will remain so, gonna leave some history on it.

A lot of the "stuff" was just that...unidentifiable stuff...nasty too.

Looks like this is a set of Down Beats if Im not mistaken.

Im mistaken as has been pointed out, they are NOT Downbeats
