60s Star Drums

From Fayray

I agree, probably early 70s. They are a Sonor copy i believe. The satin flame wraps don't wear well unfortunately. I have a similar kit that had a blue satin flame wrap but it was completely stuffed. Only cost $30 though. Here it is before and after plus the catalog page.

Sorry for the short hijack, but what did you use for a wrap on that kit?

it's an upholstery vinyl. I believe it comes from America and is pretty easy to find. I got it in our small city in New Zealand after reading a thread on another forum. It was pretty cheap too.

It is thicker than drum wrap so heads are a tight fit. Or you can trim in such a way that the heads don't have to slide over the wrap.

It's glued on using an Ados adhesive spray.

Guy's these cymbal mounts are so so hard to fine complete..I get emails all the time from guys looking for them.To the point iam thinking about getting some made the mounts are the easy part to have but the two other pieces of the mount are the hard ones to fine..I have been telling guys if you have the mount and the bigger piece on the left of the photo that was posted you can make a cymbal mount..You can used a cymbal tilter and add a rod to it with another tilter on top of tube...But them again you need the main piece to do so....Mikey

Hi Lucas

I got it from a place called Aaron's emporium but there may be a place down your way that sells it. They have it in gold, green glitter and silver glitter. It cost $15 per metre and is about 1.5 metres wide from memory. So 2m is plenty for a kit. If you need me to get you some let me know.

I actually have an identical Kingbeat which i bought from the same seller a couple of years ago. It was really dirty but was only $100 and it cleaned up great. I was having a punt at this one because of the condition and the original brochure and stand. I would have paid more if i didn't already have one. Here's mine:

Lucas,

Over in the states that product is called Sparklebrite. It is the same product you would use to do retro bar stools, upholstry and also what one would use to cover Kustom speaker cabinets if you remember those. I was assuming this is what his kit was covered in and that is why I asked. You can do a 4 piece kit for around $45. There are actually quite a few colors available. I have a project kit I am working on for a friend and can't afford to wrap it with the usual suspects so I will go this route because Fayray's kit looks pretty great. Fayray, did you happen to submit a thread on using this product? If not, would you be willing to do so? This appears to be a great option when working on non-collectible drums (no offense to those who like MIJ kits) for those of us that don't posess professional paint finishing skills. Now back to the original thread. Again, my apologies for the hijack. This just seemed important to me and perhaps others.

Here you go, the original thread. http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=25491&highlight=star

In the thread is a link to a blow by blow account of how it's done from a forum member on the Pearl drummers forum where I got the idea.

Cheers Andrew your a darn legend you know that!

Mate thanks for the heads-up on Aarons Emporium. I will PM you in a minute and gratefully accept the offer to secure me some wrap.

Oooooohhh that Kingbeat is so nice Andrew. Bet it sounds beautiful!

Also soooo amazing to see the original Star brochure on that TM auction resplendent in its era correct "japaninglish" translation.

I would have bid on the other Kingbeat but I came across a 70's Ludwig Acrolite a few weeks back for $230 which kinda killed my 2nd hand drums funds.

Im a big Stax/Motown/Atlantic fan so just had to have it for that vibe.

I see somthing similar to the cymbal mount your looking for in this listing. Not sure if it's the same http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-60s-70s-Japanese-drum-hardware-Crown-Pearl-Tempro-Kent-/321248814833?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4acbebe6f1

It looks like two pieces from two mounts? Can someone who has one confirm?
