60s Star Drums

From salty 1322

Hey John and fishwaltz! My drums are at my guitar player's house but, I believe the mount is a bit different. My second tom covers the mount as well. All I have is the triangular mount like yours and conical toothed piece which is part of the mount. The gentleman from whom I bought the bass says that he must have lost "the little piece somewhere". This was a few years ago. I have never even seen one. I'll try the old catalogues again and try to zoom in. Maybe that will help. Very interesting though. Brian

John, I keep going back to your attachment. Your mount must be identical to mine. I just wish I knew what the piece that connects the mount to the cymbal arm looks like!

Well Mikey might have one/some. If he comes up with one, I will default to you and let you have it as I have no money right now and have several other projects to work on before that one.

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Fayray, did your kit originally have a cymbal mount on the bass? I have the identical Star Stream Custum as seen on the catalogue page but with the addition of a second 13 inch tom and a cocktail drum used as another floor tom. Originally one of the toms was covered in gold satin flame. I have been trying to find the connecting piece for the cymbal mount to the arm for years.

No cymbal mount on mine as it has a factory 13" as well. My other Star kit (now sold) had the crazy cymbal mount like the one on John's but I never had the arm. They are quite hard to find i understand.

John - Yes, my plan is to one day do the inlays. The wrap is a vinyl used in upholstery which is thicker than drum wrap. This makes the heads a tight fit but they go on with a bit of encouragement. The wrap cost $30 and i have loads left over, even covered the 13" tom that i don't use.

Hi guys.

I'm pretty sure I have the complete original cymbal mount assembly. Here are some not-too-close-up shots. Sorry one photo is on the side. If I turn it 'round, the site won't let me upload it...

Anyway, let me know if you want some close-ups, or anything else. Sorry, I only have the one so I can't sell it.

Hi, Bryan!

Thank you very much for the photos! Now I know what the assembly looks like.Man, I wish I could find one. They must be quite rare. Thanks again.

Hello,

This wrap is a nice copy of Premier's 'blue shimmer' finish of the late 60s/ early 70s.

@Brian: best of luck in finding such a cymbal arm!

Since I had my camera out anyway, I thought I would take some shots of the Star cymbal arm. It is undoubtedly more complicated than needed, but it does allow for some adjustment that you can't get with the 'standard' floor tom style mount.

Hope this is helpful.

Man, that's BRILLIANT!

First time (guess not only to me here) that someone has given us a detailed view to this cool (and as I state always: ugly :D ) cymbal mount system, which is, if complete like this one, rare as well.

Thank you very much, Sir.

Thank you very much, Bryan! I now know with more accuracy, how these strange things work. I may never find one but, at least I know that at one time, they existed.
