i never heard of or seen a avh tribute kit by ludwig. never even seen it mentioned in any books. post some pics.tama did do some "stripped" kits in the 80's. i've seen red/white/black and i've seen black/white. as for al's black and white stripped kit, it couldn't of been acrylic. if dave jumped on them they would break instantly. i know its a wood kit because i was lucky enough to see it when i went to the v.h. storage space with my old boss years ago.this site won't let me load my pics. but the kicks are 2 bass drums joined together to make one big kick. and on the front inside of each one you can see metal supports installed so when dave did jump on them, they wouldn't break. it also looks like the shells were all painted inside. in neil zlozower's v.h. book, there's a full page pic of dave standing on the kick on page 144 showning all this.and in a 2nd pic i have of the kit, just below al's arm you can see the edge of the black stripe peeling back. i think all the black stripes are tape. its not uncommon, a seen one of stryper's early kits and tape is also used to create the stripes.
Yes its true that alot of guy's used tape to make stripes on the drums..Just a side note about Robert Sweet-{stryper's drummer}- his first sets were all done with tape-Black-..In 1989 Robert came to the shop i was working with and wanted to see if we-{i}- could make him a custom set and make the bass drums with a 45 degree anagle in the middle of the bass drums..almost like a "U" in shape i would say..We did make him the set with the bass drums the finish was done in Yellow and Black plastic we did not used Black tape on the set....Mikey
Thanks Guys. Yeah, The Actual Vh Kit Is On Display At The StoreThe Guy Mentioned In An Earlier Post. I Called The Store ManagerAnd We Talked About My Kit And The One On Display. He Said He HadNever Seen A Vh Tribute Kit Either. He Said Eddie Let Him Borrow Al's Kit For Display Use Only And It Is The Real Mccoy. The Guy SaidThey Are Very Rough And Have Road Rash From That Tour.....he Said They Look Good From Twenty Feet But They Have Been Rode Very Hard. I Ask If He Would Sell Them. He Said No.....eddie Gave Him Specific Directions Not To Sell The Kit For Any Amount Of Money.I Offered Him $10,000 And He Said No Way. Usually 7 To 10 Grand Will Buy A Famous Kit, Depending On Who's It Is And Size. Hell, I Saw The Drummer For Kansas (phil ?) Kit On Ebay For $7,000. I AlsoSaw One Of Scott Rockenfields Kits For $5,000 On Craig's List. TheKit I Really Want Is Pat Benetar's Drummer (hiram??? Can't Remember His Name) He Used Back In The 80's. It's A Single Bass With About Six Huge Mount Toms. The Shells Have A Oriental...chinese Writing...white With Black And Red Lettering. Anyway, I Tried To Load A Picture Of My Vh Look-a-like And It Said I Had Too Many Pixels....max 1000 On Jpeg. My Picture Is 3,500 Pixels. Anybody KnowHow To Modify Or Reduce This Picture? They Are Really Cool AndI Would Love To Share This Photo....especially For Vh Fans. In Reference To The Earlier Post, About Comparing My Kit To Al's Tour Kit....it's Not The Same....not Even Close. My Bass Drums Are 22's And My Toms Are Different. Anyway....if I Can Reduce The Size Of Picture I'll Post Them. Thanks And Happy Drumming!!!
Another side note guys.On Myron Graumbacher set with the Oriental writing on it was done by a friend Aaron Glasscock the drums started out as white gloss the Red and Black writing was done by Aaron's hand in paint..Arron did two of these sets one myron i think still has.The other one Aaron has in his collection still to this day...Mikey

I had a kit wrapped in an enigma once...
Yeah, I Did Some Homework On Myron's Kit With Pat Benetar.
I Found A Promotion Ad Slick From Ludwig.....there It Was
One Bass And About 4 Mount Toms, Two Floor Toms. I'd Love To
Find That Kit.......no Telling What It Would Cost!! Thanks For The
Picture Info........van Halen Pics On The Way.
We Got One More Ready And My Name's Not Eddie And Then They Went......1,2,3,4.......blast!!!!! Dokken .....erase The Slate.
This is supposedly the original kit.
Thin Shell...thanks For The Picture. Well......when I Get The Picture
Loaded You Guys Will See The Differences Between My Kit And The
Real Tour Kit. First, The Tour Kit Has Offset Bass Drums, And The
Two Extra Bass Drums With Metal Supports Is Obviously All Custom Work For Al And For Dlroth To Jump On Top Of (discussed
In An Earlier Post By Another Guy) Al's Bottom Heads Were Removed For His Desired Sound Via Mic. Here's What Is Weird....
My Toms Are Much Longer (even If I Pulled The Bottom Hoops Off)
The Actual Size Of The Mount Toms Looks To Be The Same As What
I Have....i Can't See The Floor Toms. I Think One Guy Said Al Uses
A 18" And A 20" On The Floor. Mine Are Standard 16" 1nd 18". Well,
Bottom Line My Kit Is Not A Big Al Tour Kit For Sure But If Someone Re-wrapped The Shells To Copy The Vh Kit....they Did A Hell Of A Good Job. I Have Never Seen A More Original Looking Set. Will Load Pics Later In Week....going Out Of Town... Peace Out!!!
I thought at first you may have bought this kit...
Hoppy,
Holy Smokes......bad Ass Kit!!!! Man I'm Gonna See If He Still Has Them. $4000 Out The Door....no Shipping. That's A Problem Since
He's In La And I'm In Florida. I Think It Would Be Worth The Trip.
You'd Have $10,000 In That Kit After A Full Set-up...but How Many
Dudes Have That Big ***** In Their Basement? None
And The Two Extra Bass Drums With Metal Supports Is Obviously All Custom Work For Al And For Dlroth To Jump On Top Of (discussedIn An Earlier Post By Another Guy)
Those metal supports are standard Tama bass supporter from the late 70's/early 80's. They pop up on the bay from time to time... item no. 6635.
here it is in a Tama catalog : http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/anniversary/expansion.php?cat_id=32&now=1
