11 Piece Ludwig Monster -double Bass Kit From 8o's Van Halen Tribute

Loading...

Hey fellow drummers. I recently bought a 11 piece kit that I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. From what I can tell their rocker's, gray inner shell, black/white badges (1980/1981), 6 "power toms".

Top toms are: 8",10",12",13",14, 15".....two 22" bass drums and 16" and

18" floor toms. They are black and white stripped like a zebra.

In 1981, Alex Van Halen, in Oakland California played a kit that looks

identical...., he had the ol' black dot heads and typical add-on bells and whistles. The clip is called "the holy grail...van halen" The good ol' days...Roth doing his thing....unchained, ain't talkin bout love, etc.

A guy in California told me Ludwig made a limited number of "tribute"

sets to tie in with that tour? I can't get any info out of Ludwig and

the kit seems to be some kind of mystery. I think their 6 ply maple,

they are wrapped, have a very "BIG" sound and are in excellent condition. I'm wondering what their worth, and are they anything more than just a big kit with a cool look. Thanks.....and I'll post some pictures soon.

Lenny - I found this blurb on the kit Alex used on that tour. It only mentions that he used Rocker heads on the drums, not that they were, Rockers. Compare the sizes. If your drums match, you may have an interesting kit.

"Alex's drum kit was designed to his specifications by Ludwig. It included two bass drums: one 24-inch-by-32-inch and a second at 26-inch-by-32-inch. A single felt strip was stretched across each of the heads as padding (or muffling). His pedals of choice were the now obsolete Ghost bass drum pedals outfitted with wood beaters, which required him to glue leather pads at the point of impact on the bass heads. This technique was required because Alex had a tendency to split the beaters almost immediately without the pads. His snare measured 14-inch-by-6½-inch and he used five power tom-toms measuring 13, 14, 15, 18, and 20-inches respectively. Ludwig Rockers heads were used on all of his drums. His cymbal setup consisted of one 24-inch Paiste crash cymbal, seven 20-inch cymbals, and a 15-inch hi-hat. All of the kit's hardware was Ludwig and the joints and tension mountings were welded, due to the fact that the other band members had a tendency to jump on his kit during the show. During his solo, the kit was raised into the air above the stage, spinning and shooting off fireworks."

Best of luck... hope this helps.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I believe his kit was acrylic, Vistalite with crude plastic welds holding the Black and White pieces together. I think it is on display somewhere.

i never heard of or seen a avh tribute kit by ludwig. never even seen it mentioned in any books. post some pics.

tama did do some "stripped" kits in the 80's. i've seen red/white/black and i've seen black/white.

as for al's black and white stripped kit, it couldn't of been acrylic. if dave jumped on them they would break instantly. i know its a wood kit because i was lucky enough to see it when i went to the v.h. storage space with my old boss years ago.

this site won't let me load my pics. but the kicks are 2 bass drums joined together to make one big kick. and on the front inside of each one you can see metal supports installed so when dave did jump on them, they wouldn't break. it also looks like the shells were all painted inside.

in neil zlozower's v.h. book, there's a full page pic of dave standing on the kick on page 144 showning all this.

and in a 2nd pic i have of the kit, just below al's arm you can see the edge of the black stripe peeling back. i think all the black stripes are tape. its not uncommon, a seen one of stryper's early kits and tape is also used to create the stripes.

Thanks Guys. Yeah, The Actual Vh Kit Is On Display At The Store

The Guy Mentioned In An Earlier Post. I Called The Store Manager

And We Talked About My Kit And The One On Display. He Said He Had

Never Seen A Vh Tribute Kit Either. He Said Eddie Let Him Borrow Al's Kit For Display Use Only And It Is The Real Mccoy. The Guy Said

They Are Very Rough And Have Road Rash From That Tour.....he Said

They Look Good From Twenty Feet But They Have Been Rode Very Hard. I Ask If He Would Sell Them. He Said No.....eddie Gave Him Specific Directions Not To Sell The Kit For Any Amount Of Money.

I Offered Him $10,000 And He Said No Way. Usually 7 To 10 Grand Will Buy A Famous Kit, Depending On Who's It Is And Size. Hell, I Saw The Drummer For Kansas (phil ?) Kit On Ebay For $7,000. I Also

Saw One Of Scott Rockenfields Kits For $5,000 On Craig's List. The

Kit I Really Want Is Pat Benetar's Drummer (hiram??? Can't Remember His Name) He Used Back In The 80's. It's A Single Bass With About Six Huge Mount Toms. The Shells Have A Oriental...chinese Writing...white With Black And Red Lettering. Anyway, I Tried To Load A Picture Of My Vh Look-a-like And It Said I Had Too Many Pixels....max 1000 On Jpeg. My Picture Is 3,500 Pixels. Anybody Know

How To Modify Or Reduce This Picture? They Are Really Cool And

I Would Love To Share This Photo....especially For Vh Fans. In Reference To The Earlier Post, About Comparing My Kit To Al's Tour

Kit....it's Not The Same....not Even Close. My Bass Drums Are 22's And My Toms Are Different. Anyway....if I Can Reduce The Size Of Picture I'll Post Them. Thanks And Happy Drumming!!!
