What some people do to old K's floors me

That old K that Blakey had with the 30-40+ holes all around the outside edge.........doubt that was factory

You're right. If a K. was to be drilled it was done at the Gretsch warehouse by Phil Grant.

The only sizzle cymbals ever offered that way right out of the catalogue were not actually K's but A. Zildjian & Cie. which were probably inventory left over from Arams production after he was gone. Reportedly they didn't sound that good, so maybe they used the rivets just to mask the sound and get rid of them.

Oh, I forgot to mention, for about six months or so, I didn`t have a snare either, I found that one in the trash in a hard case and bought heads and a ludwig strainer and grover wires for it !! I used a cookie sheet duct taped on the stool and sat on milk crates !! I have no clue what kind it is but think it`s a CB700 !!

I got a 15" A with six evenly spaced holes and until I got to this site had no clue what they were !!

I totally disagree about aquireing a taste for a cymbal,..

I think you missed my point when I compared cymbals to fine wine. Wine connoisseurs understand and appreciate the complex flavors and aromas of a good wine. The rest of us just drink it and enjoy it in ignorance. When it comes to wine I am one of the latter. Like a vintage wine, a good vintage cymbal has tonal complexities that often can only be fully appreciated with experience. The stick, the bell, the underlying wash and it tonality all help define a good vintage cymbal. I certainly am not presenting myself as an expert, but I have been playing and listening to cymbals for over 50 years.

Ya you`re prolly right, but can I use the I don`t drink excuse ? (never did)

I hear ya though. The size and type of stick prolly matters most. To me it`s how long the thing takes to shut up enough to not hear over my next set of beats. Playing soft is truely when you know how good a cymbal sounds. (at least for me) I can tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, tap then wack the edge, wait a sec. then hit the bell to end and go into drumming again and it`s not to complicated, But I have trouble sustainning soft cymbal work. That`s why I don`t think about them much.

Moon was my idol and of course I copy his style, It`s a little un-orthidoxed but I don`t like to do the same set of runs over and over like I see on line sound track do. It`ll say ..awsome drum solo, only to find the guy doing the same sh*t over and over really fast. I mix it up. I fill in with more drumming, like Moon. I like to have C-toms up top and the floor and kick resonate heads for diversity. Ya I`ll go back to the same set but it`ll be after I fill inbetween for a bit.

You're right. Here it is:

But you know, this may possibly not have been a K. at all, but something much more rare and never yet seen by me or anyone else that I know of....

It could possibly have been 20" A. Zildjian & Cie. See the example in the ad below and compare it to what you see him playing.
