Vintage Repair?

From macr0w

Okay guys,I came really close to screwing this tom up good.I had marked the wrap with a measurement from my Remo head. Then I ordered some Aquarian American Vintage heads.I'm so glad I didn't start cutting on this thing before the heads got here. That would have been a big mistake. When I got the heads out of the box I tried to put them on and it was real close but no cigar. So I decided to just trim the overlap and see what I could get.So I started cutting on my mark that I had made with the Remo head.Well, the Aquarian heads I got aren't as deep as the Remo heads are.So now I have this little gap on the bottom side. There is no wood showing, just the edge of the wrap where I cut it and feathered it down a bit.I'm going to find me an orange sharpie or something and touch that edge up. :pLuckily I only did one side before I realized what I was doing. On the top side I marked it using the Aquarian head and it is a lot closer to the head.I also have this little score mark around the drum just below each hoop. It's barely noticeable when just looking at the drum. You can see it in the close up shots.Over all it turned out pretty good for my first wrap job I think. These are the things you learn right? ;)All I have left to do is the finish cleaning the parts for the bass drum and install them and I have to glue the inlay on the hoops.I hope to get all that done this weekend. wish i'd seen this thread earlier...

the most consistent way i've found to trim wrap edges is with a Dremel tool in a router baseplate, in pretty much the same way you'd cut a bearing edge

the wheels as guides keep the "saw blade" at a tangent, and you lightly "pull" the shell towards you as you rotate the shell; wrap is usually only a millimeter or two in thickness, so the sound of the blade cutting and the appearance of wood after the cut are your biggest clues to how deep you need to go

the only thing i would change next time is having a taller table next time, so the "cut line" is at eye level at a more comfortable height, instead of 16" from the floor : )

EDIT: i've posted links instead of the photos, because they came out HUGE here

Dude!!!

That's pretty awesome! Clapping Happy2

I might try to set something like that up for my kick drum.

That is the only one I have left to do.

Great idea.

The new wrap definitely has a bit more red in it than the old.

But, I'm digging the hell out of it.

I will spend some time tuning them tomorrow.

I was so excited to just play them that I just slapped the heads on it and started wailing. LoLoLoLo

Everything looks like it matches to me. I think that is one of the coolest looking kits I've ever seen. Congratulations on doing an awesome job!

Wow! they came out stunning. But I knew they would after following the thread we could see how careful your were and how much thought you put into a paticular step, before you dove in. Be proud and enjoy, they are just beautiful.

The wife and I were looking at the finished set this morning and Wow ohhhh Wow. They are drop dead gorgeous. There is no doubt what wrap will be on my next project kit. I can't tell any color difference in the pics. Your keeping these?

Correct? Are you going to play them out. I would. I bet they will look spectacular under stage lights. Are you going to put a Gretsch logo on the bass head?
