Slingerland stage band rescue

Loading...

Hello drum folks

I usually post on the non-U.S.A. side as I like collecting MIJ kits

I found some 1966 Slingerland stage band drums in silver sparkle

which unfortunately were painted over in a really horrible purple color

One odd thing about these drums aside from the awful paint job

the 12" tom is drilled for separate lug casings for each side

while the bass drum and floor tom are fitted with the single center mounted stage band style lugs

Yet the light colored wood interiors are all stamped Feb 1966

did Slingerland to anyone's knowledge produce drum kits in this strange configuration?

another question would be how in the heck to get all this confounded paint off my silver sparkle wraps?

my research so far says Citri-strip from home depot ...What say the experts ???..............Kenwood

I used goof off to remove black paint on a rogers 16" floor tom. it was work but it removed every bit of it, and didn't hurt the wrap at all. sound like the 12" tom is just a standard tom not a stage band tom, that was an add on to the other drums.

Hello vintagemore2000

Thanks for the reply I had thought the same thing myself as to the 12" being added

But all three shells are stamped Feb 1966 That made me much less positive about things

Thanks about the goof off I will say I tried goof off to remove some gunk of some sort

off an old Revere BDP snare shell and the acetone based goof off sort of melted the surface of BDP wrap a little I have been afraid to use it since then

But on the other hand that was just some random gunk and tape residue not paint

The goof off worked just fine on the thicker wrap that the big name companies used, the MIJ wrap is a lot thinner,

Hello again and thanks a million vintagemore2000

I had not considered the difference

with regard to thicknesses between American and Japanese drum wraps

I had not mentioned this before but along with these stage band shells I picked up

There was also a virgin 22" Slingerland bass drum

and for whatever reason the previous owner painted this drum the same awful purple

and only the stage band floor tom and mounted tom were painted purple

Obviously to make a matching set with the 22" drum

The stage band bass drum however was not painted and still retains a really nice silver sparkle finish

So since the 22" was sort of the odd drum

I decided to make my first attempts at stripping off the paint on it

I went to Home depot and got some of that Citristrip gel

It took me a few hours in the back yard applying the stripper to about half a panel at a time to remove 90% of the purple paint to reveal a nice white marine pearl wrap \

My next question is what to use to clean the residue and small amount of purple paint

I do not want to use more stripper as I think it would be too aggressive to the wmp wrap

I was thinking mineral spirits (don't have any but that was what I was thinking of using )what say you ?

I'm into a long -term project on almost EXACTLY the same set. It was painted black with a brush, gold glass glitter underneath. No floor tom, Stage Band 12" and 22" missing ALOT of parts. 7-1/4 " T-rods are made of "Impossibilium". I'd like to find a close matching MIJ Slingy-lug 16" Gold Sparkle FT but am not holding my breath...

Try Graffiti remover to get the last bits. Don't let that set too long.

Citi strip is ok on wood but I have had bad results on plastic or gloss finishes.

Novus products are the best I have found to restore luster to wrapped shells. Flitz polish close second.

Pretty sure Slingerland wins on any darn thing could and did roll out of the factory.

Any pictures?

Thanks!

Hello teverson-sr Thanks for the reply

as to your uphill stage band project and my own

I guess the old saying is true misery loves company

Good luck with yours ^5's

Hello Creighton

Thanks for the reply Yes I am wishing now that I had waited for more input

I was good with the way the Citristrip worked on the paint

But I think it ate some of my wrap too

as the wrap has sort of a textured feel rather smooth and there is still quite a lot of residual paint streaks here and there

In fact my result was very much like my experience with the goof off

which is why I was afraid to use it here

Now I am not so sure I'll use it to uncover the painted over silver sparkle shells

As for this test drum with all things considered

if I can get all the paint off the drum and have it clean and uniform

I can live with the slightly weird texture

as the wmp is so much nicer than the plumb crazy purple paint

I will look into that Graffiti remover Thanks for the heads up on it

Hello Kenwood,

Regret to inform the wrap is damaged. Some of the paint has most likely become imbeded in the wrap surface. Do to the melting of same. Try the 0000 steel wool with Grafitti remover to get what you can off. 3000 grit sandpaper wet and Novus #3 lightly using alternating circlar and cris/cross buffing patterns wiping clean every now and a again may help. Follow with #2 than #1. Had the same thing happen. Still makes me sick to my stomach. It is not much but did learn something. Success is easy F*up's are spendy. Hope some others chime in with their knowledge.

My wrap is also damaged, but it's staying there. I used regular gel type paint remover twice but monitored it and removed asap. The black paint migrated into the glitter in some places, which can't be fixed. Talk about relic-ing...
