Slingerland stage band rescue

Loading...

Hello JSdrums,

Thank you for the reply and the input on the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser

I just took the 12" drum outside and went for it

The Motsenbocker worked well

though I may have worked a little harder than I had to

seemed like some paint came off easier than the rest

In any event all the purple is off the wrap with no melting of same

Now what I am faced with is a silver sparkle wrap where in the greater majority appears

to be more of a nice champagne gold sparkle does anyone think the Novus products will restore the silver???

Congrats on getting the paint off. Novus will bring a shine back to the wrap. I don't know of anything that will restore the silver.

Hello again Creighton

Thanks about the paint

bummer about being unable to restore the silver

sort of throws a big ole wrench in the works

strange though as the unpainted bass drum is nice original silver sparkle

while the painted shells essentially protected from UV damage by the paint

have this discoloration ..and I almost hesitate to say discoloration as the Champagne golden areas are perfectly uniform and not muddy or blotchy or "black-headed" at all

still though, the areas under the lugs and tom mounting plate are perfect silver Hmmmmmmm??

Well they may have painted over a layer crap. Give Novus 3 a try and see what happens.

Yep! same thing with the floor tom

there is a small area of lifting at the seam

of only the clear outer layer of the wrap

it is this outer layer that is not clear anymore but yellowed

the exposed sparkle bits under this area are perfect silver GRRRRRRR!!!!!

I wonder if any of the products designed to de-fog weather and sun beaten head lamp lenses would do any good?

here are a few pics of the results

I never learned how to do a macro shot with this camera

so the last shot trying to show the nice silver

under the yellowed outer layer of wrap was a bust

I wouldn't care so much about the yellowing

If the gosh darned bass drum were in the same boat as these two drums

Hey Kenwood,

That looks like cig smoke they painted over. Spray a spot with the original blue Windex let soak a minute or so and scrub with one of your Majic Erasers. See what happens. If you get a yellow foul smelling mess on the eraser. Consider that a good thing. A way to tell if you have all of the grime off, is the wrap should feel smooth.

Headlight restorer is overpriced Novas #2 with puny chunks of Majic eraser. FYI the generic erasers work just as well and a tad easier on the wallet.

I made a little progress with these stage band drums

I decided to first reassemble these once painted over purple

Slingerlands without trying to do anything further

to the "ginger-aled" silver sparkle wraps

just to see how good or bad the two affected toms

pair up with the still mostly original silver sparkle bass drum

Here is the "non-stage band" mounted tom

that was apparently original to the other stage-band style pieces

all shells being stamped FEB 66

Well those are just beautiful. :)

You may be able to get that discoloration out yet; I would have expected the actual hex glitter to have tarnished, but since not, the tint might be on top of the plastic as opposed to in it. You can play the drums while you decide what to do...:)

The fact that the plastic layer is peeling from the glitter like that is very interesting with regards to how that wrap was manufactured...

Hello Mitch, Thanks pal.

I wish I were as confident as you

on getting the yellowed originally clear plastic top layer of the wrap clean enough

to restore the perfect silver underneath it

I did a little test scrubbing here and there

and from those few brief attempts I was not encouraged
