This is what I did to remove the pins in dad's clamshell strainer & butt: I cut the pin in half with a hacksaw blade behind the shell. Took a little time, not a lot of room to saw. Then, for assembly, I used about a 3/8" long piece of small brake tubing to "splice" the pin back together and soldered it. Held it all together in a vise to get the correct tension in the bracket before soldering the pin together.

Wow thank you!! That's a great way to fix this. That'll work just fine. :)

Did you notice when you removed the pin if it was originally a 2pc pin? My son was looking at it today and felt it's a 2 pc pin as installed. Looking close myself now I can see a small bulge and fracture on one end where it looks like the shorter pin was pressed into the other. I'll know for sure tomorrow when it's out but was wondering if you noticed?

Thanks.

The pins I've seen look like the head on one end has a hole in the middle and was pressed-on to the pin "shaft" when the strainer was assembled at the factory.

Thanks~! That's good to know. If all goes well I'll have the butt end repaired and back on the drum by the end of the weekend. I'll take some pictures of the fix to post also.

First I need to give some major props to Makurtz~! Thank you for the excellent fix info it worked like a charm. I used a steel roll pin as a sleeve inside with some locktight to connect the pin back together. NAPA didn't have the tubing size I needed in straight tube. Only bent lines for the master cyls per make, model and year. So I used a rollpin and it's a nice solid fix. We did try to solder it but the pin wasn't having it. So the locktight was used and the pin was pressed into place in the vice.

Here's some pics..........

Pic #1 shows the damage with the pin first cut away.

Pic #2 shows the clamshell straightened with parts to assemble.

Pic #3 shows the assy ready for the pin replacement.

Here's the next series of pics..........

First one shows the small length of rollpin cut to size and everything chaumfered ready to assemble.

Next the pin installed with the spring tension arm.

Last a pic of the pin inside you can see the repair and housing straightened. Since the pic I bent back the nub straight that holds the little arm the wire screw goes in. It's a little off in the pic.

Next up back on the drum she goes!!

Forgot to say......to straighten the clamshell housing I used a small plastic hammer on the small vise (covered with rag) and a small pair of toothless pliers to form and bend it back into shape. Not perfect but a whole lot better than it was. LOL.
