Exactly....."a collector"..... most collectors buy for rarity and re-sale. Now a normal everyday drummer who wants a vintage ludwig....I wonder if he would want a blue sparkle or a black panther????
I'm really not a vintage collector, but my very first (used) drum set I bought back in 1987 was a Ludwig Black Panther wrap, so it holds a special place in my life. I was just a high school kid who saw it only as 'black', even though I knew it was different than the gloss black most commonly seen. My set was/is all dated 1971 by stickers inside the shells, so even when I got "my first drum set" those Black Panthers were 16 years old then. Now they are almost 40 years old and still in fantastic shape for the most part. I don't gig them because as I got older I learned that they were somewhat a rare finish and I later learned finding add on drums is pretty hard.
My original set I found out many years later was called a Rock Duo in the Ludwig catalogs. 2-20" bass drums, 12", 13", 16" toms, 5x14" Super-Sensitive snare (though the catalog shows it coming standard with a Supra instead). It came with Speedkings and all the vintage hardware as well as 5 soft cases for all the toms and bass drums and some vintage Zildjian A. series cymbals: 21" ride, 20" crash/ride, 14" New Beat hi-hats, and an 18" Paiste Stanople crash. I spent a grand total of $320 on this used set back in 1987.
But, since many collectors don't care much for this color I've been able to find all 14 Black Panther drums I currently own for fairly cheap. I actually picked up a Pro Beat set about a month ago (24", 13", 14", 16", 18" -no snare) which was in for the most part again fantastic shape for its age for under $500. I've heard similar stories from other guys who have equally scored Black Panther sets for dirt cheap.
