Factory UNCUT slingy bearing edge-Unbelieveable!

Loading...

Dear me. Fast forward one year later after an ebay purchase of COW chrome over WOOD 8 and 10 inch concert toms. The little guy (8 inch) did always sound a bit chocked, so I was changing out the head when... The bearing edge is COMPLETELY FLAT?!? At first maby some clown ground it flat but it looks too perfect to be so. What's worse is the wrap is too close to the surface to simply have a new edge cut.(rolled steel?) Do I wait to score a replacement or unwrap/cut/rewrap with saved wrapping,which will be "sprung" and difficult to reglue? Come to think of it, if misprinted US coins are worth a bundle...maby I have a valuable slingy shell?

I ran into the same thing. Bought a Slingy 8 and 10 concert pair from a member only to get them here with absolutely no edge on the 8. Strange stuff. I am putting an edge on it. No big deal here 'cause I'm not looking to keep them perfect factory ... considering slipping a double tom lug run, too.

Pics would really help seeing the problem.

COB= chrome over brass.

COW= chrome over wood.

There isn't enough wood above the edge of the wrap (only about 1/8 inch or less) to provide a workable bearing edge.If the wrap was a pearl, then the router bit would cut right through it.I don't see any other alternative.I COULD live with it but now its really gonna bother me when I hit it!

I would not try to remove the chrome wrap.. It is a huge pain, and very well stuck down. To remove, and save it might be nearly impossible. There are other options tho. You could use something like a dremel tool with a cutting wheel, and carefully remove the needed wrap. Then rework the edges. Or as long as there is some wood protruding from the edge, you could just work the inside edge out until it is sharp. It may not match the other edges, but it doesn't match the other edges right now...

Posting a picture of an 8" and 10" concert toms I had some years back. Yes, they were also COW! I removed the wrap with no too much difficulty. No wood splintering. You can see what the wood looks like after removing the chrome wrap.

As to the edges, there really was no edge! While it might appear there is a round-over, there really is nothing! Very odd about these 8/10 toms!

Idrumzzz PICs looks to have somewhat of a bearing edge, unless these are your post-reworked edges? Thanks for the inspired confidence to go on with the rework. It's worth the minor effort to get the right sound. Hey,could be dealing with a 26X14 ¡!¿

I've ran into various shells from different manufacturers with no edges, bad edges and snare beds way out of whack, it happens. Bad day at work, misaligned machines, training a new employee, Friday before a holiday, etc. I just chuck it up to normal human error and re-cut. No big deal.

You're probably correct in that there might have been "somewhat of a bearing edge". But, believe me, that's all it was! Still the toms sounded good!

As to removing the chrome wrap, I honestly don't recall it being that difficult. I believe I used a heat gun to soften up the seam and than just began pulling the wrap off with a nice steady grip. I may not have tried with a big bass drum! Give it a try and see how it goes. Good luck to you! Post pictures along the way.
