Here are two shots of the Slingy 8 inch tom with absolutely zero bearing edge cut that I was speaking to in my previous post. Hope this sheds a bit of light on this topic. This is not just a weak edge ... it's no edge at all. Completely flat.
Again, this is the batter side. The reso side has the metal band and is just as flat ... it's a concert tom.
I removed stainless wrap from a 12x15 Slingerland TDR marching snare. It was more tedious than more traditional wrap, but it was truly not that hard. I just used a heat gun and putty knife. jccabinets has had success in re-wrapping using stainless steel if that was something you needed to do.
I suppose I should clearify. I removed wrap from a a std. 5 piece. I just didn't think that removing the wrap to re-use would be a quick easy task. I was giving alternate answers for the problem. I know that the wrap I removed kinked alot, but I was not trying to save it. I was just thinking that trying to remove, clean, re-apply, and line all the holes up would be a tall order. I am all for trying something tho. Please post some pictures or updates with whatever you do. Good Luck!!!!
Why would you need to remove the wrap? Mask it off with cardboard as to not damage the wrap during the cutting. If you gauge angle and depth right, you can do it two passes and fine sand.

I personally wouldn't want to remove the covering ether, but I think he is worried that he needs to cut further down than the covering on his outer pass, and a router bit won't trim away the metal wrap.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry,too lazy to post a pic :O BUT just immagine the top edge of steel wrap,then add just about 1/16 th of shell protruding.I'm not astonished that it left the factory like that.But damned FORTY YEARS LATER and everone is still passing the problem along? LOL. I just might dremel away some of the upper wrap then cut a bearing edge as advised.Thanks all you guys!!!
Are you doing a double 45 ? I see what you mean. The bit will go through that metal wrap like it weasn`t even there. They don`t cost alot to replace either !!

Ditto the heat gun and putty knife. Once you get it started, it comes off fairly easy. Now... I'm not real sure it would be OK trying to put it back on, however.
