Drummers

Loading...

My fellow drummers and vintage drum collectors. I 've noticed a few things since I've been on this forum. Let me first say that I am a drummer, I play in a band, I sweat and use every ounce of energy through the course of a four hour gig and that's not including set up and tear down. I buy or trade for drums to play them and not just in my garage.

My observation here is that many of you are what I call stay home drummers, you play for yourself and find more meaning in your last drum find.

You claim to be vintage drum enthusiast, but when I list beautiful vintage drums for trade or sale I get absolutely no response, but the minute I put up a bogus DW kit you're crawling out of the woodwork. That's fine, but don't claim that nothing else is good unless it's vintage.

I see a lot of beautiful kits here, but what I don't see is those beautiful kits being played. I wonder if all the vintage drums I see here are just for show and a lot of you guys are secretly playing Pearl Exports or hoping to trade for that DW kit you've been drooling over, but don't want to actually buy.

What's up with you guys? Really, if you're going to own a piece of history, do something with it.

I play all of my vintage gear live and in the studio. I'm sure most of the posters, here, do as well. I have 2 shows this weekend and I'm debating what kit to use. That's the fun stuff.

You got us all pegged, for sure. How do you continue to do this? Alas, you truly are the only real drummer on this forum. We are all nothing more than basement wannabees. We are a bit shy and embarrassed about that, so be kind. As you've no doubt already surmised, none of us really knows how to play the kit, so we buy the old ones that many other talented real drummers like yourself have played on real gigs ... and we fantasize. It's our way to cope with our limitations. You on the other hand are living our dream. It's never a pleasant thing to be "found out". So, thank you for not being as harsh as you could have. Thank you for sparing our feelings. You are one in a million and a wonderful asset to this forum. Play on real drummer. Play on.

well i deal in drums. starting my own drums shop here in canada ontario.and i will tell you that most guy's who play drums are not pro drummers just regular joe's who play in a garage band/cover band's or guy's hammering out there favorit tune never the less they are still drummers. pro drums are very expensive for the average. so the market is swamped with low end kits. and a few of them guys got some real vintage gem's handed down to them. and some saved up for that special kit. and ya your right some guys would trade a vint kit for a modern kit like dw. so what. who cares what some one dose with their kit .i play some heavy duty sonor's in a band and in studio and when i go to my good friend house for a beer we play on his beastly drum set and yet i still have "FUN" D' Drummer from 200$ to 10,000$

i play a pearl export at church most every weekend, however they had no kit until i donated the pearl. if we could keep others off it (like the guy that wrote all kinds of dumb things on the snare head) i would bring my script badge rogers or vistalite kits.

I must have missed on the DWs. are they still available?

My vintage drums dont live in the garage.

I gig.

For the month of Oct. I have played out the Red Ripple Rogers, in honor of breast cancer awareness month. They look pink. I want an "I "heart" Boobies" bass drum head, but I dont think that would go over really well at a gospel venue.

MCJNIC...Thanks! I was trying to figure out how to defend my glaring lack of full time "professional" experience. You said it beautifully and relieved my feelings of rejection. ;)

Ha, ha, I new a thread like this would bring you out, glad you chimed in, I was getting worried that you had found a new forum to infest. As for the rest of you, I only started this so my dear friend mcjnic would come out to play. You see, he cannot resist a good confrontation.

I know a lot of you guys play and I sure don't claim to be anything special, but it seems guys like mcjnic only like confrontation, I was just trying to prove a point.

I respect all you guys who play and not just by themselves, being a musician means playing with others, even if you're not the best. I'm sorry, but I really have no respect for guys who claim to be drummers, but never play with other musicians other than the occasional "jam secession". I mean what's the point?

I love controversy....it seems I'm not alone.

Well, I have to admit. I am probably the ONLY "collector" on this forum that can't play a lick. Sure, I try. I make noise and pretend. I sit behind my poor, old, ugly Pearl wannabe no-name, WMP drums and wish....I wish I had taken the lessons offered in my youth, but decided on a different path. Without me, and the others like me many drummers, and guitar players and bassists....hell, many bands would not have had the "proper motivation" to play live, back in the day.

Today, I restore and rebuild old, worn out drums so that some kid, somewhere, might not turn to the life I had. I got in trouble, but the truth is, not nearly as much as I deserved. So, let's see, if I could play, I certainly would, and play loud, like my brother did. He loved his old drums, he loved his new drums, he loved drums. I love drums, and now I do it for others. Makes no matter to me if they are MIJ, MIT, MIK, MIUSA....don't care, as long as I can afford them, I buy them and restore them and share them with the world...and wish...I wish I could play, whether as well as Mickey Hart, or John Bonham or Keith Moon...or even my hero, my brother Dan. But I can't, so I dream. And I build drums. And I do some of the best work out there. My methods may look on the surface like some disorganized, half brained loon, but I assure you, play one of my creations and you will immediately change your mind about Asian drums...or not. Makes no difference to me, I love what I do. I can't play...but I can tune.

"Ignorance may be overcome through education. Stupidity, however, is a lifelong endeavor." So, educate me, I don't likes bein' ignant...
