From CT Pro Percussion

Looking for some honest opinions here, I have teamed up with a local artist to try and bring back the art form of painted calfskin bass drum heads. The artist is going to be doing a landscape scene reminiscent of the Ludwig & Slingerland catalogs back in the 1930's & 1940's as well as doing some classic Americana themed heads and several pinup girl variations. I hope to have the first few ready for display at the Delaware drum show for a "soft" premier with more ready for the Connecticut and Chicago drum shows. This is a first look at the landscape scene and this and each of the other variations will be available on bass drum heads from 18" to 28" with larger sizes and custom paint themes available as custom orders. Depending on the size of the head and complexity of the paint design I am looking to retail these between $300.00 to $450.00 which I think is reasonable for a work of art. Each head will be painted with oils on calfskin. All thoughts are welcome. For reference, the head pictured is a 26" calfskin and due to the length of time to paint this head will most likely be closer to the $450.00 price mark.

I was looking through an old Ludwig catalog the other day and thinking how cool it would be to get a painted calf head for my 40's Slingerland kit. I think this is a great idea.

Let me know if I can help you out. If there is a particular landscape scene you want then let me know and I can give it to my artist. The landscape in the picture is going to be my standard landscape but we can do custom work as well.

Alright, I started the large 14" x 26" bass drum that I pictured above in a previous post but that is only a 1/4 of that entire project. In addition to the bass drum I am also working on 3 snares for this customer as well.

The first snare is getting an entire new shell and came to me in parts. The snare (all three drums are 16" x 16") has hoops in a 9 hole pattern and had small white ears on it but the major concern here was how thin the shell on the drum is. The group playing these drums is located here in Connecticut but actually play rope tension snares with leg rests attached. I was afraid that attaching a leg rest this shell would only result in the leg rest going through the shell. I also found it amusing that you can see light through it.

Here is a look at the inside of the shell. A new 16" x 16" shell has been ordered to replace this one.

Snare drum #2 is an old Premier drum. The drum pictures has white facing with the group logo that was placed on it and a tack pattern on the side. The tack pattern will remain on the drum, each drum will get a new logo on blacking facing and this snare, the new shell and the bass drum will all be stained in a mahogany finish to try and match snare #3.

Snare drum #3 looks like it could be an old Gretsch or Ludwig. It has a nice ribbon mahogany shell and is going to get cleaned up and a total make over.

Drum # 3 has a crack in the bottom of the snare side hoop that will be getting repaired

And another crack in the snare groove section of the bottom hoop as well. The hoops on all 4 drums will be painted in a matching red.

I thought it was cool when I opened the drum up and found this writting inside that shows the drum was played by the Ellington Parish train Band in 1975 and found that at least one of their members was a founding member of the Sailing Masters fife and drum corps here in CT. Call me a total geek but I love finding history and provenance inside drums.

I started cutting out and stamping all of the ears that I will need for this project, which is that largest project I have done to date for a single customer. The bass drum has 12 ears, one of the snares has 9 ears and the other 2 have 10 ears for a total of 41 ears that needed to be cut out and tooled. The Ears have been stamped with my oak leaf on the back side (symbolic for the charter oak here in CT) and the GFG is for the 1st Connecticut Governors Foot Guard. Additionally I will be adding 5 small stars to the edge of the ear to represent the state of Connecticut which was the 5th state to join the Union in 1788.

These are the 26" bass drum hoops that just arrived, they will be drilled for 12 holes each and then painted a nice red to match the rest of the drums. More pictures coming soon.

Been busy again so I haven't updated this thread in a few weeks. Here are some more progress pictures for the projects I am working on.

First, I sanded down a bunch of hoops, some new and some existing for the Governors Foot Guard Drums and the other kids bass drum I am working on. I also had to hand drill for the rope holes for the bass drum and the kids bass drums.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Once they were all sanded and ready they got three coats of a nice red paint.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The leather ears got tooled with initials and 5 stars in recognition of Connecticut being the 5th state to join the union.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The ears then got chrome rivets and were glued as well so they wouldn't come apart.

The shells got stripped and sanded and the new shell got bearing edges cut and they were all stained in mahogany finish to try and match the one mahogany drum as close as possible.

This is the one actual mahogany shell drum sanded and urethaned.

With the staining done I was asked to take a different approach on these drums and instead of painting on the shells as would be traditional I was asked to use a vinyl graphic on the shells instead.

Nice work! How do you get the lettering and stars in the ears? Do you have a stamp of some sort or are those hand carved? Interesting stuff! Are you having a booth at the show next week?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thank you!
