Well I got the hoops drilled, stained and coated and they are now ready to go on the drum.

Hoops done, shell done, ears done and rope cut. Drilling the holes for the strap clips now and then putting a grommet in the vent hole. Last thing to do before assembling the drum will be to put a label inside. I should hopefully have the drum finished at some point tonight and I will post more pictures.

Looking for some honest opinions here, I have teamed up with a local artist to try and bring back the art form of painted calfskin bass drum heads. The artist is going to be doing a landscape scene reminiscent of the Ludwig & Slingerland catalogs back in the 1930's & 1940's as well as doing some classic Americana themed heads and several pinup girl variations. I hope to have the first few ready for display at the Delaware drum show for a "soft" premier with more ready for the Connecticut and Chicago drum shows. This is a first look at the landscape scene and this and each of the other variations will be available on bass drum heads from 18" to 28" with larger sizes and custom paint themes available as custom orders. Depending on the size of the head and complexity of the paint design I am looking to retail these between $300.00 to $450.00 which I think is reasonable for a work of art. Each head will be painted with oils on calfskin. All thoughts are welcome.

For reference, the head pictured is a 26" calfskin and due to the length of time to paint this head will most likely be closer to the $450.00 price mark.

Matt that head is beautiful~! Really nice and I think your on to something here bringing back the oil paints on skins. Not to cheapen the concept but would he/she also paint the old style shield and initials? I know you can get them as vinyl transfers but oil paint on drum skins are far more authentic. Also maybe leaving it open to use pictures supplied by the buyers as custom one off's?? Just thinkin out loud here but man grreat idea!!

I am going to eventually do the shield with the initial but need to create a stencil to do it first because that is something that I can actually paint myself. I am also offering hand painted vintage logos like the Ludwig script logo, vintage Leedy, Slingerland, Radio King, Rogers scrippt log, Gretsch and Trixon. I have made stencils for the Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers and Trixon and am already offering these.

My son is finally getting caught up on back logged work. I'll discuss with him today a afternoon to get up there to see you. I'll have him bring a guitar or 2 so you can see what he does. He's very interested to meet you and see your shop as well. I have your # and will give you a call.

Okay, it's been a while since I put some new project drums up so lets go for broke. At the moment I have a lot of rope tension work so that's what all of these here will be.

Drum #1: I believe that this is an old Slingerland drum that was painted rrep over a nice wood grain. 15" x 12" deep. This will be a rope snare conversion.

Drum #2 Wooden snare dated 1874. This drum had a nice eagle painted on it at one point but more than 80% of it is gone and not salvageable. This drum will be striped down and refinished and then turned on its side to make a small kid sized rope tension bass drum. 16" x 9"

Drum #3: Radio King marching snare. Not a huge market for these so for now this is a parts drum with no specific project in mind and will remain that way until I see how much wood comes off with the wrap. 14" x 12

Drum #4: Small Ludwig marching snare 14" x 10" with mahogany shell. This will be a straight up conversion to a kid sized rope tension snare.

Drum #5 This is a mahogany snare, 16" x 10" with a star inlay. This drum may also end up as a rope bass drum but I haven't decided just yet.

Keep watching over the few weeks for several more new drums
