Black Friday ROGERS Find! Project!!

Loading...

So a good weekend of progress on the Orbit kit - the wrap is tight and all the seams look great - a few small chips on the exposed edges, but nothing too bad.

The buffing route wasn't working, and as much as the cool vibe of the stains/fade was somewhat appealing, it wasn't consistent, so I decided to go the wet sanding route.

The before picture shows the weirdness we saw in the shop (Kemps Music, Vincennes, IN). Notice the discolored streaks running across the shell - like it had gotten extremely hot and melted. Clearly not your normal sun-faded BDP wrap.

As I started the 400 wetsand, the gunk gave way and yielded to the sanding, emitting an odor smelling exactly like Vicks VapoRub menthol - so I'm guessing this may be the worst case of nicotine encrusted drumwrap on the planet! The kit must have spent a long time in a smoky bar, then somebody stored the 12 on its side in the sun, and the gunk eventually ran down the shell. Whatever the case, the 400 broke through well enough. There are two panels where the staining was worse than the others, and I didn't press my luck going deeper, so there will still be a little vintage MoJo left. Pics show the 400 wetsanded 12 against the untouched 14 (14x14) and the 12x20.

Work continues.....

Well, I guess we could say that is a smokin' find. I have to admit that I'd be very tempted to apply some new wrap. Unless of course I had decided to gig it at a very smokey bar. Very cool sizes and a great find. Nice to have your son in on the project too. That's worth far more than the kit. Here's hoping that whatever you decide to do, you enjoy the process.

I'm no wizard of drum fix-uppery, but I have never seen a transformation like that 12" tom. I'm amazed. And since it's smoke oil residue on the other two shells as well, it looks like they're going to turn out really well. Looking forward to the end result...

From what I see I would definitely not re wrap. Those are going to look good and have much Mojo. Interested to see the others when finished and set up. Love these kind of finds. Even if the finish on all of them and all over don't come out exactly the same they are still going to be fantastic.

Probably be very hard to tell after a good polishing.

Wow! I'm so glad you decided to not re-wrap. That 12" tom tom turned out great and I'm sure the other drums will look the same when you are finished. Once you get the polished hardware back on the drums, all of the little imperfections will be less noticeable.

A 20x12 bass and the 14x14 floor tom, make this a very desirable kit.

I can't wait to see them finished.

Hah!

Yes, cs1422 is my son Luke, who is responsible for this find, so I guess I better show the most recent picture.

The kick and the 12 have been 400/600/1500 wet sanded, 14 is only 400 at this point. I decided to not go any deeper on the kick, as I'm afraid of removing too much plastic, so it will likely end up a bit more 'vintaged' than the other two. Novus 1/2 should arrive soon for the final shine. I can always reconsider later.

Clamping rerings is next. The nice thing about these three shells - no extra holes/mods anywhere!

Donor kick just acquired for some shiny bling and hoops. This pick shows some of the old kick h/w which has been through the vinegar bath.
