Japanese drum set restoration

Loading...

A friend of a friend heard that I am into vintage drums so asked if I could restore a set he has, or at least get them up and running. I think I have parts for everything, except the front 8 bass drum T rods (they're larger than any others I have!). I have an old spur bracket that fits and I will make some spurs for it. I doubt he wants to spend the money on the proper tom mount (or cymbal mount for that matter), but if anyone has what this requires, let me know and I'll ask him! The bass also has some water damage and even mold in there.

No, it is a Star set. The T-rods are Star. It is pre-67 because of the 3 ply shells. These are the shells I harp about, Matt. The T-rods are hard to find, but Mikey may have them. As for the shells, this is how I do it. Since there is mold, a good sanding is in order. Get it down to 220 then hit it with a coat of lacquer while you are waiting for the Ts. This will accomplish a couple of things, sealing the shells and making them more resonant. These will boom when finished. They are the same design as my WMP in the Gallery, MIJ in the sunset. What other parts do you need? Or anything else you would like some pointers on? The edges usually need a smoothing, it gives the heads a better fit and makes them a little easier to tune as they will slide over easier. Are the toms 45, 30 or roundover, l;ike the bass?

Sorry Matt, I just saw something, they are possibly

Pearl. These are the ones that are so hard to determine. The Pearl cymbal mount...aarrrgggghhhh! Anyway, these are decent drums. The T-rods are the type Star used, and the mount is Pearl type....so....????

There is just the 12" tom. The edge is round like the bass. The edges are in pretty nice shape, they were nicely done.

The snare drum is troublesome. Heads I've tried so far won't go on. . .

Like I said, it'd be cool to get the tom mount for him, but I don't know how far into 'restoration' he reallly wants to take it.

Ask Mikey. He is so extremely reasonable it's not funny. And the tom mount is like mine, exactly. So I know he has one, and it shouldn't be more than about 30 or so plus shipping for the tom arm and Ts.... And it is worth it to do this kit. What is with the snare? Can you show me? What heads are you trying? I am using a coated Emp on one, an Evans power center reverse dot on another, a clear pinstripe on another one...and then the original Apollo head on another...I think that has all but one...Oh, and I have one with an Attack head on it. Try that one, it should work, the snare is super cheap. As a matter of fact, you can get a complete 5 peice set of heads 12-12-16-22 and snare for about 33 delivered. I can get you hooked up with them the way you need if wanted. The 22 is a good head as well, I like it.

Hey Jonnistix--You are right i have the parts..Now for the set to me that's a Star made set and came out with a name of St.George late 60s way ia'm thinking St.george do to the fact that the t-rods on the bass, the big fat odd size metric rods, also the tom mount and L-arm cymbal mount too...Mikey
