Ludwig Black Panther

Ok Guys, I'm about to embark on a new restoration project. I just acquired a blue olive Black Panther 4 piece kit. 22-16-13-12.It is missing several tension rods, 1/2 of the bass drum T rods and claws, the bass drum square small spurs, and all the heads. There are a few nicks and scratches on the textured finish and a 1" x 1/16th" dent in the floor tom. One bass drum wood hoop is black with what looks to be a sky-blue pearl inlay. The other wood hoop's inlay is gone. One of the toms has slight water damage inside of the shell, and 1 ply of the shell has bubbled up in a spot about the size of a nickle, close to the edge of the shell. All the chrome is in surprising shape and will polish up nicely. I contacted the seller about the missing parts and contacted the guy he bought them from to see if maybe he had a box of small parts laying around. As soon as I hear back from them I'll start searching for parts, order parts, ebay for parts and waiting for parts. I dug up a set of pinstripe heads and a set of fiberskyn heads. I think I have a set of renaissance heads that will fit also.

The pin stripes all have 3-4 1" pieces of scotch tape stuck on the tops. Whats the best way to get that off?

I got my Canon ready to document the whole restoration. Ill reflect on this a bit and get started very soon. I cant wait to park these in between my 68 sky-blue pearl kit and my Blue Vistalites!

Couple of tips for you.....the best thing to do to clean the wrap is use a vinyl cleaner then a protectant such as armour all on the finish. The seperated ply can be fixed wth a block of wood, some carpenters glue and a clamp. Use a surgical syringe to inject the glue into the problem area, use the wood block to protect the finish and also push down the affected area and let set overnight after clamping it down.

BTW, the factory inlay for the hoops should be silver sparkle on all black panther bass drums.

I had planed on injecting the glue and clamping, especially since it is so close to the edge of the shell. Armour All is something I have studied at length. It is the absolute worst thing you can put on a car's vinyl top, however, It seems to work well on tires, dashes, door panels etc.... , but then again all armour all is, is dilouted slicone. In west texas it also attracts a lot of dust, but sure does make dried up vinyl look good~!

For Scotch tape, peel up a corner and gradually wick rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone, or another citrus based cleaner as you peel. It might take a while to dissolve the tape adhesive. Ronson lighter fuel (naptha) will cut the tape residue also, but don't plan a fireworks show while using that stuff.

How does NuVinyl work for you? Armor all has never done more for me than shine for a few hours.

Very weird about the inlay on the hoop. My vistalites have the sliver sparkle inlay, and I my sky blue pearls have the sky blue pearl inlay, now I have a new kit with a whoop that matches my sky blue pearls. I have been searching for a blue vistalite snare which I found and should be here today, but i had a saved search for it on ebay, and this morn there's a 22" whoop with the silver sparkle inlay in my inbox lol. Im watching it already. I wonder where this sky blue pearl inlaid whoop came from? The guy that sold these had 2 Supraphonic snares. Im guessing that was the original snare that came with this kit. BTW I found my Blue vistalie snare at guitar center in allen park michigan, for $229

I have a few questions that I need y'all's opinion on. Should I hunt for the original tension rods and t- handles, or just buy new ones?

The Floor tom legs are very rusty, should I find oem or just buy new?

The spurs are missing, and the holes that the spurs slide into are 3/8" square, so they should be square stock like my vistalites, except the holes are much smaller than the 1/2" vistalites. I am assuming that there were at least 2 sizes of the curved square stock spurs. Im sure these are rare and hard to find. I pray one of the previous owners have them.

The bearing edges need some attention also. Looks like im fixin to get educated on re cutting bearing edges. Is this something I should ship to someone else to do?

The earlier 3/8" spurs are harder to find than the current 1/2" ones, but not impossible. As far as the legs....the only new ones available are the 23" long ones. The 17" long ones are hard to come by. You may be able to clean up the originals with some elbow grease and the right chrome polish. As far as new for the T-rods and tension rods, thats fine as they are identical to the originals, bass drum claws are different from the originals now however.

Post pics of the bearing edges before you go and re-cut them. Let us give you the word on if thats the way they are supposed to be or not. You can de-value these significantly if you just arbitrarily cut new bearing edges.

On the bearing edges, Im thinkin, maybe I should just fill in the cracks and build the few low spots up with wood filler. The dent in the floor tom is close to the center. the only thing that comes to my mind on fixin that is maybe a very long pair of vice grip clamps. squirt glue under the raised up ply, find something with a similar curve and clamp it on both sides of the shell, with something between the outter shell and clamp to keep form messing up the finish. maybe a piece of a old worthless shell the same size. On another note. I have some vinyl that is almost identical the the black panther grain. I might get me a Ludwig cs accent snare and cover it with the vinyl. It definatly wouldn't be original, but might look cool with the kit once its finished, after all the cs accent drums have to bowtie lugs on them. Is that a stupid idea? I did it with my sky blue kit
