I decided not to dress my shells with a silicone based substance, instead I opted to redye the finish with SEM Vinyl Dye. I have used this product in my auto interior restoration business for yrs. It is fabulous. The dye covers a multitude of imperfections, and you dont have to re apply it regularly. I am extremely happy with the results on this project.

From TIMN8R

I'm a new guy here and just want to share what I know that works...In my opinion, Armor All is not an ideal product. Not all water borne silicone dressings are formulated the same. For vinyl and rubber I prefer Meguiar's Mirror Glaze professional number 40 vinyl & rubber conditioner. Clean the surface with Simple Green, hot water and a brush. Rinse well, allow to surface dry, apply Meguiar's 40 and buff dry with a clean terry cloth towel. Produces a nice, rich satin sheen that does not look fake. As for the drum wrap, if it clean, is not porous nor is it heavily scratched, try using Meguiar's Mirror Glaze professional number 7 show car glaze followed by Mirror Glaze professional number 20 polymer sealant for a finish that is very slick. Professional number 6 is an excellent cleaner/wax if you are looking for a one step product. I do not work for the company, I just have years of experience using their products with outstanding results....

I totally skipped work today and polished my rims, and tom tree. I put the new heads on. Evans genera reso and Pinstripe batters. All 3 toms are finished.

My Ludwig logo bass reso head and a spur are on thier way. I still need to finish my wood hoops.

The dye job you did on those toms looks great. Did you ever take a picture of one of the un-dyed drums next to a dyed one so we can see how close the coloration is of the vinyl dye?

Ok here's the tom before the dye. Notice the white streaks on the finish. They would not clean off.

Now here's a pic after the dye: White streaks are gone now!!! Voila!!!

Thank you! I appreciate that. I am passionate about drums. It's thrilling to restore these to a collector's dream, and sorta like works of art. I get to use all my knowledge I have accumulated, and plenty of this forum's knowledge, on these precious pieces of history. My g/f calls my drums "The Other Woman" lol

Wow, that dye worked nice. Could you tell in person if the shade of black was the same as the original, or did it tint it slightly lighter or darker?

The old wrap was old and faded. I cleaned the sh*t out of it before I redyed(painted) it. There is only one shade of black. anything else is a shade of grey.

Black is Black. The camera flash or desk lamp might make it look different in pics, but Black is Black.
