Ludwig Black Panther

One more thing. If you do sew the vinyl into a sleeve and glue it to your shell. Dont put the seam right over the middle of the lug holes. Put the seam just next to the lug holes. If you center the seam over the lug hole, when you puch the hole out through the seam, you will break the thread and the seam will unravel and would be very frustrating for you.

This is from an earlier post... Might need some pointers on matching up tO the wrap on the Premiers. The saMple (pic4) is fAbric from upholstery shop, but the wrap on the tubs is apparently a self-adhesive black vinyl. Looks darn close to Black Panther which is why it caught my eye. NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD BY MORE BLACK DRUMS, BUT HEY, WENT WITH WHAT I LIKED. oDDLY ENOUGH, THE GUY AT THE SHOP recommended that the vinyl be sewn into a tube shape and shimmied on to shell. Go figure!Jump For Joy

What I haven't seen mentioned is that Black Panther is simply good ol' "Mother-Of-Diner-Seat", aka black Naugahyde, a vinyl fabric, and is still readily-available, in MANY colors besides black, including sprakles, which were used way back when to cover "tuck & roll" guitar amps for Kustom and Plush.

There's more than one black grain, but I have a sample swatch set someplace and the original is still available.

Did you take a drum with you to the upholstery shop??As best I can tell yours look a lot like a vinyl called madrid grain. madrid was used by General Motors from the mid 60's till the late 70's. Then GM used sierra grain till the 90's. As a rule of thumb in the upholster business, "Color is more important than the grain" Black is the easiest color to match, but there are so many different grains, sheens, and stretch on all vinyls. Most vinyls strecth from side to side accross the roll. If you cut your piece going up the roll there wont be much stretch.

That's probably another reason I like this look because I'm a 60's car lover as well. He also showed me about the stretch factor. So I guess I'm looking for madrid grain, but it's a glue on sheet vinyl, not a fabric(although I'm not opposed to the fabric, I think the sheet vinyl is really what I am after.) Although, for the record, I like the idea of taking him a sample drum to match up to, & I might take him my 2 small (8" & 10") concert toms and have him sew me a "sock" to wrap them with.

Take your drum outside and take some more pics without the flash. get as good of a close up shot as you can and let me see it again. Try to eliminate the glare on the pic. Ill try to figure out excatly what grain matchs the best. Take the highest resolution your camera has and email me the pic. Then I can enlarge it and see the grain better. OK. Today i will cruise home in time to get some natural daylight shots taken. Unfortunately my drum shop hours 7-10pm still don't see any daylight.electricit

Yeah, this material is very similar to what you would see on a lot of older speaker cabinets. Although, not rugged, like a Peavey cabinet, but much on the thinner side, almost, dare I say, contact paper. OOps I said it. Falling Do. I think this is a good direction for me: ANY idea what this naugahyde stuff costs?? Have you wrapped any drums with it before? if so, how does it compare costwise to a premium drum wrap? Thanks, JR Frond, glad you chimed in on this one! Going to check out your website now!

FYI, naugahyde is merly a brand name used by uniroyal. There are many vinyl mfgs. Naugahyde is the term many people use for vinyl, however naugahyde is the brand that produced the zodiac grain for the custom amps back in the day and is still readily available today. I made a drum bag for lucky out of green zodiac a while back. We just finished doing 22 resturant booths out of charcoal zodiac. Back in the 50's and early 60's everyone called vinyl letherette. There have been 100's of different grains on vinyls over the years. Ford, Chevy, and chrysler have had there own different grains of vinyl. Black panther certainly looks like regular vinyl, but I assure you its not plain ole naugahyde. BP wrap has no knit backing like naugahyde would have. Im certain it had no stretch before they laminated it to the ludwig shells. On anoother note, fender Guitar amps are covered out of vinyl that is identicle to levant grain vinyl top material. Levant was mostly used by gm in the early days of vinyl tops. I have been using theses vinyls in the upholstery business for over 40 yrs. I have any sample you need and most of these in stock at my shop. What sample swatchs do you have???

I got your pics. As far as I can tell, the vinyl on your drums is not automotive. It looks like some that I am familiar with. Does the vinyl feel real soft and sorta silky, almost like genuine leather??? Ill look through my samples when I get to work, if I dont get busy and forget.. heres a few pics of my vinyl racks and sample racks....

Ok here's a few pics of the Ludwig Black panther compared to ford corinthian vinyl. As you can see, the BP and Corinthian grain are almost identicle

I haven't wrapped drums in Naugahyde, but I HAVE covered guitar amp cabs in it (I was in the custom guitar amp biz back in the late-90's). I HAVE stripped BP drums, and it looked identical to Naugahyde to me.

If you want to look at the "Tolex" (a General Rubber trademark)-style coverings for guitar amps (now called "Kayhide"), the manufacturer is Kayline Processing in NJ, but they usually only deal through distributors. This is where the aforementioned "Levant" material, as well as others come from.
