I'm very curious about this. As I've stated, I find it very difficult to believe that the metal bonds change and rearrange while sitting in dirt in that short of a timeframe. My guess (and it is only a guess) is all that is occuring is the relaxing of the cymbal. That can be accomplished by using mallets for a few minutes. This has seriously fascinated me. What reactions are occuring? Can anyone identify the specific molecular interractions? I'm stumped to come up with a better explanation. It seems to me that it has to be a simple relaxing taking place. Help a science geek understand.

when. i made the statement it works at the molecular level, this statement was a response, from a forum member that said if you don't like what happens you can just clean it off, No you can't once this has been done the finish is altered for good, and i gave him a week at a time schedule so he could gauge the process to his satisfaction, i usually keep the cymbal buried for a couple of months with some other tricks i want divulge, all i can say is i have used this method on around 20 cymbals, it completely changed the color, texture, feel and sound of the cymbal, i will post a pic of a sabian hh brilliant finish cymbal, later for you to look at,

OK 1st off there are 11 pages again 11 pages on this very old subject that not one of you have any experience or knowledge about this subject, so listen up class here is a sabian 16" hh brilliant finish cymbal that i had buried for around a year in the ground and there are some other technique's that we old guy's know but i ain't telling, if you have a brilliant example of this or any sabian or zildijian go look at yours then mine, this is my last comment on this really!!!! it changes the cymbal completely, the sound texture, color and feel of the cymbal,, looks wise it changes the finish and the feel for ever you ain't gone to clean it off,"ie" it rapidly breaks in the cymbal, so now go make another 11 pages about it,, "really" until you've walked a mile whats the point, i'm not telling you to do, but the subject was brought up and i opined with my EXPERIENCE in this matter,, so here are the pics class!!!!!! also kevin has seen held played and smelled this cymbal that is photoed, ask him!!!

The cymbal book By Hugo Pinksterboer

I googled " can dirt change the molecular structure of bronze" and I found this book, in it's entirety. Page 79 pretty much says that when a cymbal is made, the molecules are stirred up and they reallign after a certain period of time. I believe Billy Zildjan was the name of the person who was footnoted with this statement.

It also says that a person's ear get used to a certain cymbals sound and is more likely to "think" it is sounding better.

I guess the point of this is that there is a book that pretty much details every point made on this subject. Some of you die hards may have already read this book. Maybe it is a good source of information or maybe it is all balogna, I don't know.

Credit everything said in this post to that book's author and his sources for that book. None of this is my own original thoughts although I personally am suspect of dirt changing a metal cymbal and will continue to be until scientific proof is given. Going by a human ear's testimony that is sounds better doesn't really qualify as scientific proof. Human beings have a tendency to be subliminally biased towards desired effects and this could be a huge part of this myth.............

have a wonderful evening
