Yes, the 14x14 floor tom has that mystique of higher prices...many times in the stratosphere! I had a chance to pick up a period correct 14x14 floor tom for my 1966 Rogers Headliner for less than $500. I finally decided against it as 14" toms just don't do it for me. I really prefer 15" floor toms, which is why I converted a Rogers 12x15 marching tenor into a floor tom! It really pairs well with the 8x12 mounted tom!

The 12x15 marching drums are bargain priced floor toms just waiting to be completed. Similar sized marching tenor drums are even more special because they don't have the extra holes for the snare strainer and snare butt. Also. the bottom hoop is the same as the top hoop.

All excellent points! I did have to plug the holes from all those extra mounts and eye-bolts, though! And had to drill for the Swivo leg mounts. Still, I didn't have to worry about existing snare beds and the holes from the strainer and butt!

There’s a 14x14 Gretsch RB in burgundy sparkle for sale on reverb for $2500, but it’s been up for a loooong time. In fact, i do believe they actually raised the price once. It seems like there are more Gretschs than Rogers 14s out there.

Like you, I once ordered a new Ludwig kit. It was all black lacquer except the snare was purple shadow or something like that. I tried to put the sizes in the middle of standard sizes for the most part except it did have a 14x14 floor tom. I seldom used it. The balance of the kit was a standard depth wood snare (purple just to have a bit of contrast) 16x20 bass, 9x12 mounted tom and the other floor tom was 14x15. The 14x15 sounded great, so I almost always went out without the 14x14.

My 14" 1963 Ludwig Club Date floor tom is worth more than the rest of the set. Odd thing is I found a 16" floor tom in the supposed same wrap (sky blue pearl) but when I got it it didn't match up well at all, plus the lugs were a different style. It looked out of place so I sold the 16".
