What did I just buy?!!! MIJ or Ludwig?!!

Loading...

Honestly, I swore up and down that I need NO MORE drums! While perusing for "MIJ" drums on eBay I came upon a title that read "VINTAGE 1960'S - 1970'S SNARE DRUM GREEN SPARKLE MADE IN JAPAN." The description read "Condition is used. Functions properly but does exhibit some wear and tear consistent with use as seen in pictures. Bottom snare head has been replaced so it's not the original. Comes from a smoke free home. If you need additional pictures or have any questions let me know. Thanks for looking!"

First thing I noticed were the Ludwig Classic lugs on a re-wrapped shell, with an MIJ strainer and butt. Also appeared to have a BB muffler! I was wondering why anyone would go through the trouble of installing Ludwig parts on a cheap MIJ snare drum with Luan shell! That was until I saw pictures of the interior! It sure looks like a mid-60's Ludwig Pioneer to me! About the biggest issue is that the inexpensive wrap is STAPLED all the way around the interior of the shell!

There was a "Make Offer" option and I sent what I felt to be fair. The offer was accepted and the drum is now on its way to me! I can't wait to see what finish is underneath that wrap! I have a WFL P83 and newer P32 butt, so I'm good to go! The tension rods appear to be original, but not sure about the hoops until the drum arrives. We'll see what I end up with !

Sure looks promising, Mark!

Not enough pictures but it looks as though the air vent has been wrapped over. I can see it from the inside shot, but it doesn't show on shell just left of the MIJ throw. The Snare gate on the bottom rim is squared off which seems to jive for an early 60's Ludwig rim. I believe they were rounder in later years. I hope you win big! It's looks like a carpet layer decided to do the re-wrap himself. Hope there's no extra holes!

Mark, it looks like you have a Ludwig with a lousy homegrown wrap job and a MIJ strainer. That drum is aching for a restoration.

grantro, kdg and DrumBob!

Thanks for the positive thoughts on this drum! It's hard to tell if the badge and grommet are still attached. There will be extra holes from the MIJ strainer and possibly the butt. I did look at other Pioneer snare drums and the hoops do appear to be original, as do the tension rods. There's a ton of staples into the shell on the bottom, but I can't tell if the same was done to the top. As such, there will be a lot of tiny holes once I remove all those staples! Still, I'm wondering what will be under that vinyl wrap! Will it be a cool finish or a bare shell from the original wrap being removed. Time will tell!

Yep looks like a pioneer with a junk throw off and maybe a grade school arts and craft style wrap but i think that the shell and NOB rims look good

Keep fixing them up...

Yes, I love that "arts and craft style wrap"...and all the staples attaching it to the shell! It would be pretty cool if the hoops are NOB!
