Top washers should be declared illegal. And all offenders should be beaten severely about the head and shoulders with rubber truncheons.

There's nothing illegal or moral about using one, and these days more often than not drummers do use them. What I don't understand though is why. Can you explain what advantage you get from putting a large felt washer on top of the bell? I've never done it mostly because back in the day when I started playing the drums nobody did it. The only thing I can see it used for is as a dampener, like felt internal mufflers in vintage drums.

Keyhole. Every time you hit it, it will rock against the stud. Starting your keyhole. You can lift it right off so there's nothing to stop rocking it. The top felt fills in the hole on the cymbal and you really gotta smack it to rock it. One time I cut a pen for a sleeve but the cymbal cuts it. The felt lasts longer and you can re-configure it. It will shorten the tone if too tight.

I've been playing for 60 years and I never keyholed a cymbal yet with no top washer, but then again I don't play hard rock.

I started out playing speed metal and death rock. Always goofing on jazz and elevator music. I'm in about a year and a half learning jazz and elevator music now. You learn quickly that it's endless as the others are limited. All heavy, speed, death rock groups sound the same. Can't say that at all about Jazz.

I know it was not Intentional, but mentioning jazz and elevator music in the same sentence twice is kind of insulting to us life long jazz players and lovers. Maybe elevator music means something different today, but it originally referred to the calming and numbing background music provided by Muzak Corporation to make longer high rise elevator trips more tolerable. The term was not complimentary.
