Slingerland shell repair

Loading...

Here is a drum I bought off DFO about a year ago or more. It was in bad shape, someone did a really bad repair to it that needed to be undone. This drum is probably not worth the effort but oh well. here are some pics of the drum when I first got it. It is a 7 x 15" 3 ply, mahogany poplar mahogany.

Thank you!

I removed the entire exterior mahogany ply then cut out a section of the poplar and inside mahogany ply but staggered the cuts about one inch.

From green glass drum

Great job jc.Did you pre-bend the plywood?If so.....how?thanks

Thanks,

That poplar is a piece of solid poplar wood planed down to 1/8", not plywood. It was flexible enough to bend without soaking or steaming it. I simply clamped one end then worked it around with the c-clamps one by one until I reached the other end. It came out very solid, I am very pleased with the results so far.

Thank you!

The repairs that JC is performing is proof positive that there's almost no drum to be thrown away when you have the skill to repair it. Had I obtained this drum, I would have immediately deemed it too far gone and not wasted my time! My hat is off to you, JC!!

Thanks again Mark! I happen to have some mahogany veneer and poplar boards in the shop so that made it easy. Im not sure if what Im doing is the correct way to fix this drum, it might be a waste of time. Im sure real drum builders might laugh at this project. I bought this drum for a very low cost and all I have had to purchase so far is a Gibralter strainer, but I am considering new repop beaver tail lugs. Never had a 15" snare drum, cant wait to play it.

Thank you!

Nice work! How are you planning on finishing the drum? Stain? Wrap?
