Rogers Pink Ripple Pearl wrap

Dude, I hope that is a Rogers external mount muffler on that bass drum.... Otherwise I am going to have to knock a few points off of a very nice kit! You are exactly right on that non match of that 14. If one is going to spend that kind of cashola on that b&b kit, they need to do the correct floor tom.
14x14's all around are very hot commodities...but indeed, Slingy and Luddy definitely made more of 'em so they only tend to go for about $200 as orphans, in good shape.

Where do you see Ludwig and Slingerland 14 x 14s for $200???

Getting "cheeky" with me, Rich ? Mister T ;)

I have picked up orphan shells in both mfr's for about that or less in the past year. Orphan Clubdate FT's, often looking pretty haggard and maybe missing hardware....come up fairly regularly, if not quite often....

Greedy folks are tryin' their best to get their $300-400 for 'em, but nobody's gonna be dumb enuff to bite on those prices for a Luddy. Market doesn't support those sorta asking prices.

Similarly, a Slingy search turned up a 14x14 project shell (ugly but very rehab-able) sold for $50...and some foo' trying (unsuccessfully) to sell a pretty cherry-looking 60's red sparkle one for $445 ! And he keeps tryin'...and tryin'...and tryin'.....relist after relist. Again, Slingy folks ain't stupid. There's no reality in trying to get that sorta price. I have picked up 3 or 4 Slingy 14's over the years...they never went for over $200-225....

Now, I wish I could say the same for Rogers people DOH...

.....because, there is absolutely NO JUSTIFICATION for this drum going for what it went for !!! That's just completely, completely absurd. Hell, you can pick up a whole 3-pc. Rogers kit for that dolla !!!

(and, no, please...don't next ask me "where do you see 3-pc Rogers kits for $600 ?" Falling Do)

Gorgeous kit, Plough. And your point is well-taken.

I think it would be darn near impossible to actually land an identical pink ripple FT of the exact same tag era....I mean, seriously impossible.

I do, however, think that nabbing one of a different era would still produce a kit of high market value, even though one piece wasn't factory. Certainly not the same market value as a factory original, but nevertheless, it'd still be a valuable kit. When you get into something as rare as this wrap color, short of the factory kit...that's about the best one could ever ask for...

Here's a few additional shots...

The 14x14 with one lug removed, to show any fade...

The 14x14 is much darker against the my other WRR's...

All the best,

Joe

I called the guy with the set and left a message. If he calls me back I will ask him what the deal is with the floor tom. I will reply with any info I gather. You never know, maybe he has it but it is in rough shape or something. Also isn't it possible the set was purchased as a three piece. Not likely but possible. I'm also going to question his price in a nice manner.

Yes, I was getting cheeky. Actually, not sure what that means, unless, of course you think my butt is big, but I exercising and eating better, so I;m workin on it...

I looked at that ebay completed list and didn't see any cheap complete original 14 x 14s for decent prices. Yes, orphans, fixer uppers and projects can always be had, but, having done this for 20 years, you can often end up spending more on fixer upper after all is said and done, and they're often impossible to re-sell. This is especially true for folks that are just getting into vintage drums.

In most cases, you're better off finding complete sets that came together and don't have "issues"...

Now back to working on my "cheek" issues...

The man selling the drums called me back. He said that he had recently bought the set from an estate sale in pennsylvania. He said that the man who bought them new in 1963 was killed in Vietnam. The soldiers brotherhas stored them under plastic until now and said that the set was purchased as a three piece due his brother not having enough money for the whole set. The seller also stated that the set was in absolute 100% mint condition and that the right person would pay his asking price. So as it has been said, it will be next to impossible to find a matching floor tom.

Im not saying they arent nice drums. But........ there would need to be a whole lot more pics. JMKs got some nice ripple pearl drums. And he knows how hard it is to match color on these. Still, the bread and butter lugs are a deal breaker for me.
