Very interesting. I'm sure those snare drums will be well out of the ability of mere mortals to afford. Ludwig's track record of accurately reproducing any of their old drums is not so great so it will be interesting to see how close they can come this time.

Absolutely right about this, K.O.! Ringo's Jazz Fest has been well documented, so I see no reason why Ludwig can't get it right. Still, their track record always leave out important details. I wonder what they'll do about the P-83 strainer and red felt BB muffler. Will they put the badge and muffler in the correct location? Listen up Ludwig and get it right!

I mean they take their current Jazz Fest shell in the Legacy Mahogany line, make it 5.5 instead of 5, make a repro P-83... maybe source the Angel Drums baseball bat tone control, add some Black Oyster Wrap... and there you go!

That's what they should do and doesn't seem impossible. There would certainly be a market for P-83s if they made them again, above and beyond what would be required for these 15 drums.

But after years of 10 lug Jazz Fest re-issues and other such things I'll wait to see what they do and hopefully be pleasantly surprised. Not like I'll be able to afford one anyhow.

Gary had a drum at the 2017 Chicago Show that was a prototype. It had the cigarette burn and everything. It will interesting to see if that level of detail makes it into the final product.

That would definitely be the way to go! As for the BB muffler, they could also source the one from Canopus, but use red felt. I installed one of these on my new Classic Maple snare drum and it works great! I love the 3-position click stops...even though only the last 2 touch the head! Still it's a great muffler, but a word of caution, it won't retrofit to vintage Ludwig drums without enlarging both existing holes. I have pictures of my drum and should post them up in another thread.

Odd, I spoke to Gary at length at the show on Saturday and he never said anything about that drum. I guess I didn't notice it or just assumed it was one of his vintage ones.

The other Achilles heel of any project like this will be getting the wrap just right. They have yet to capture the true look of the original stuff but maybe this will be the time when they finally do. Although the cigarette burn might be carrying things just a bit too far. Although...if they think the cigarette burn is necessary for authenticity then surely they realize that a P-85 isn't going to cut it.

Considering Gary's Ringo signed posters are around $1000 I can just imagine what these drums will sell for so probably not on my shopping list (although I'd certainly like one, regardless of its accuracy) but if the wrap is good and the P-83 re-created and all the other details just right hopefully we plebeians will be able to order up a close approximation in an unsigned "generic" version at a reasonable price.

And I'm SURE they'll sound noticeably better than any other vintage Jazz festivals out there...

I never understood why anybody would want to buy these kinda items.

Now an actual Ringo's drum (Picasso's brush, Clapton's guitar,...) ... maybe.
