Yes, as a collector, I could see someone paying that price! All the chrome was in fantastic condition, plus the 14" floor tom and Stage Band style lugs. Again, this was the exception.

I honestly don't think that you've got anything to worry about.

Quote the seller: "Now let me be clear, I realize that this is a made in Japan set, and I'm not an idiot and think I'm gonna get what my buy it now price is."

He also added that the first decent offer that he gets that's not a slap in the face will likely be accepted.

The two of you simply need to come to a "meeting of the minds" as to the determination of a "decent offer", based on the kit in question.

^That quote was not there yesterday, unless I somehow overlooked it. I suspect the seller has either been following this thread, or he's gotten some messages from folks who know how much these are really worth.

While your posted picture is small, the color appears to be purple grain pearl. Does that seem correct?

Yes, it's a purple swirl finish that I very much like. I posted another photo that's better in my original thread.

The ad says the finish is ruby red strata. Here's a better shot, it really is a nice finish.

Purple Grain Pearl was an offered finish, but I have yet to see it shown in a catalog, either by Pearl or any other stencil company. So, yes, it certainly can be considered a rare finish and can command a higher price. The question comes down to, how much more?

Over the decades, I've downloaded 1000's of drum pictures for personal reference. Most of these have come from eBay. Searching through all my MIJ drums, I found only one Purple Grain Pearl snare drum, which was "Pearl" manufactured. It was one of their higher end snare drums at the time...10 Battleship lugs and a nice strainer. The model number was 2414. The pictured snare drum sold back in April, 2014, for $230.50.

Based on that price, I can certainly see and entire kit fetching around $500 today. Remember, condition is everything!
