MIJ Wrap Finishes-Let's Rank 'Em-Popular To Rare

Loading...

I will have to post some others from my collection when I am back home in a week.

Mark,

I see you're the person that got the Crown Blue Ripple Pearl from the bay. I was going to go after it to add to my collection and had it in my watch list but got tied up and never did anything. Looks like a great drum wrap. BTW, If you're ever looking to let go of the Star Pearl Fantasia look no further . . . Would love to have it in my collection ! Have been looking for a snare with that wrap for a while now.

No Guru - I just love collecting & learning about vintage drums!

Some of my favorites from the kits in the collection
58 WFL New Yorker Blue Sparkle
67 Ludwig Hollywood Red Psychedelic
69 Ludwig Standard Red Ruby Strata
70's Ludwig BOP "Ringo" Kit

A few of my favorite snares
20's Leedy Black Elite
51 Leedy & Ludwig Knob Tension
58 WFL Buddy Rich Classic Blue Sparkle
63 Walberg & Auge Sea Blue Agave Green Pearl
66 Leedy Shelly Manne Blue Agate Pearl

CTMichaelV!!

I watched that Crown drum for a long time. First posted at $279!! I let the seller know he was overpriced by about $200. As you know, the price kept going down...until it got to a fair enough price, with free shipping, that I pulled the trigger on it!

As to my Pearl Fantasia snare drum, they are rare...so it will stay in my collection for the foreseeable future!

I've no doubt there are many of us here who are finding out that collecting these cool MIJ snares and kits is a fun and rewarding hobby. By contrast, most of the finishes offered by the US manufacturers in the 60's were a bit mundane when compared to the Japanese market. I really love my MIJ collection...and cool finishes!

There was a faux "bamboo" finish that I saw once in a drum shop when I was a little kid--the owner of the shop tried to sell me those. I didn't like the finish--I only saw them one other time--in an ebay auction for a floor tom a few years ago.

Hey Rich Thanks my brother

Here are three tigers and a psych kit

The latter are Star made with oval shaped foil Kent badges

While I have yet to find the missing Crest snare

I did recently find a matching 14" floor tom with a Coronet badge

I had this beauty for a few years. A forum member had the matching kit and needed a snare, so I let it go. Pearl called this one Gold Grain Pearl. Haven't seen too many of these.

I found a 20" center lug Pearl made Stewart bass drum in the "sun set"

I have been calling it "rose marine pearl" for lack of the official name

The drum is 100% complete and pretty much mint

of course I am keeping an eye peeled for the other drums

but for right now I replaced the sun set hoops with white marine

and surrounded the bass drum with white marine orphans

Here's another seemingly rare finish on a "Supreme" kit from my local classifieds currently up for sale, and perfectly preserved thanks to that crappy black wrap on the shells..

Kinda looks like a sky blue "oyster" finish.. Very nice..
