From jccabinets

Well whether you think my stick method is right or wrong the job is done. All the "flaps"are glued down and should not separate from shell any further. Everyone has their way of fixing things, this was mine, I hope Oldschool will accept it.

Did someone dis your sticks Jeff? They must have deleted the post...anyway I thought it was brilliant! ...like something I would come up with :) :) :)

Shell looks good to go!

Excellent work as usual Jeff!!! Any wood filler and paint going on for cosmetic purposes or you calling it good here? Just curious. Again, great work! PS you going to the show in a few weeks?

No plans for re-painting. Thanks for the nice comment.

Just wanted to keep the shell from getting worse, although it would take a very long time for it to get so bad that it would be useless. I think we glue up some of the ring separation and call it good. Coated heads will take care of the rest.

Thank you!

Jeff:

I wanted to let you know that I just forwarded a message to your personal email regarding this project.

I really believe that the quality of your work is only exceeded by the quality individual you are for volunteering to help out another forum member without even being asked. I want to thank you again for the time and effort you put into this.

As I previously mentioned, it's people like you that make this forum great!

Thanks again for everything! It's greatly appreciated.

Update,

Just wanted to say that Gary (Oldschool) has sent me some very nice emails and is super appreciative about me helping him. He is being very patient with my slow moving progress as well.

Now as you can see by the pics this shell has some more problems to fix. It seems as though the center ply expanded beyond the re-ring when it got wet. And the shell will not sit flat on the cast table saw top. The tip of that old file is 3/32" thick. So with Gary's permission I will sand the shell down flat and re-cut a new edge. Both edges will need the same procedure. If anyone has any better suggestions I am all ears (or eyes in this case).

Thank you!

Well I ended up taking this shell to the sanding table to flatten out the edges and then put a nice new 3/16 roundover Edge on it

Here you go Glenn. These old shells sure have thickness variations, hard to get the edge uniform all the way around. But it is better than before and all of the loose wood has been glued back down and that should keep it from getting worse. Should be a great playable/tune-able drum like you say.

Thank you!
