Tama Swingstar - Restoration Project

I would finish those off (especially any that are being stubborn) with the green bottle:Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and Rust Remover. (It is the same product - that's what it's called, multi-purpose I suppose). It is REALLY affordable - like $2something at Wal-Mart. I try to use it on everything after the Dawn treatment. Not only does it refine the shine, but it also leaves a layer of wax behind for long term protection. Those Claws really came around though! Trust me on the TW - a MUST in the toolbox of restoration. Use with a Micro-fibre clothe, another MUST.

Hi. Thanks for the tips. I'm in EU. Some products and brands don't exist or have another name. I never seen turtle wax here. I'll check if there's a similar product.

Hi. Yesterday I removed the black coat from the bass drum shell. The toms were already clean, this was the only missing shell. As you can see, it was very mistreated.

The wrap has some cracks all arround. I check the "before" pictures to ensure they were already there. I think most of them already existed before. The shell is thin and it bends very easily, so I have to be careful to avoid more damages.

An interesting thing is that there is damage under the lug, that could be made during the painting process.

I will purchase the Novus 3,2,1 and give it a shot, anyway I'll need it to polish my Ludwig Superclassic and Vistalite kits.

BONUS

I never told you, but this kit has a matching snare drum! When I took the first photos, I forgot to include the snare drum and tom holder.

Let me show you some pictures.

That BD came out looking GREAT! Too bad about those cracks....but perhaps they will not grow. I don't have much experience with cracking wrap - so not in any position to offer any advice on that.

Cool - you have a snare for the kit too! I just scored a 6.5 Swingstar snare a month or so ago. I have not started the clean/polish on it yet.

I see you have alot of rust on it. I have cleaned/polished snares like that too. It just comes out looking textured like that - but very much still worth cleaning up, especially when the soaking will be doing the bulk of the work. That is a seamless snare (even on these lower line Swingstars) and should sound great while being a great workhorse of a snare. I am really impressed with how mine sounds already and it still has some really old heads on it.

Looks like you are on the home-stretch. Obviously you can see how having a large soaking container is necessary. I have used my bathtub before, but I prefer to use a large plastic container (sitting inside the tub) and shower around it.

Thanks for all the great pics! That kit is going to look killer when done!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hi. Yes, it's almost finished. I don't have the time to do it quickly but I'll finish it some day.

In summary, I need to find 2 bass drum tension rods, clean the bass drum hoops, clean the tom hoops, polish the shell wraps, clean tom holder and put everything together. The snare drum can be cleaned later.

Great job!

The cracks are normal. Not sure of the cause. Pic attached of one of my toms.

Bought the claws and lugs needed from JTS Vintage Tama Drum Parts on eBay. Appears he has a web page. If he won't ship international let me know.

This project is going slow but is still in progress.

Yesterday I cleaned the tom hoops. They were very dirty and rusty. I have some used hoops that maybe are in better shape than the original. I will clean the others later and choose the better ones.

I bought 4 bass drum tension rods because I was missing two.

Check the pictures below.
