Hi, I am going to re-wrap the kit and give the bass drum and toms the effect of it being virgin so hell to the tom mounts. However I'm not sure wether I should plug the holes or not. I've found loads of info on how to plug holes but not why anyone should. Why do people plug holes, especially with dowel, isn't that just mixing woods and adding a bunch of unnecessary glue?Cheers.
If the previous owner has been totally thoughtless and gone mental with the drill in order to make an "old and has-been" kit look "modern and funky", then there will be unwanted holes that will need plugging so you can restore it to it's natural state, with the correct fittings for the period. Plus there are possible sound issues if holes are just covered over with the wrap, as opposed to a relatively solid shell - too many air vents. But then that's purely objective, I guess. You might like the sound, you might not. Totally up to your own tastes. :) Oh, with removing the wrap, try using a heat gun. I just took the wrap off a Luddy floor tom with one. Worked brilliantly. Took a while and there's glue all over it still to remove, but very effective.
How bad is the damage? Plugging holes is fairly straightforward, there's lots of info on it posted here by our Expert Technicians. Wood plugs cut from old shells and wood filler work very well, for example. Good luck with the rewrapping, and post a pic or two. Personally, I'd like to see how you go! I've got a couple of Premier snares and they're great drums. :D
