From Kenwood

Hello R.Adam McHughYes as Jay said MIJ all the way I have heard of them before but aside from one orphaned tom shell that I found at a drum shell graveyard sale stripped of everything save for just that cool LaBoz badgeThis is the only full kit I have run into and I do a lot of looking I know there are members that have LaBoz drums hopefully they will see this, and will feel welcome to post up some pics of their kits

Gotta say I love the wrap, and it's nice to learn something new.

Please post more pics when you've cleaned and mucked about with them. How do they sound, btw?

Not sure, but I think you will find that Laboz set was purchased in the same location that I bought my first drum set, which was Lechmere Sales. Mine was a Laboz in Blue sparkle. Same configuration you have there. A complete Slingerland knock-off including the flush based cymbal stands that are similar to a Camco stand. They were actually pretty decent drums. I sold them back in 76 and never saw them again. I always keep my eyes out for a blue sparkle set. I've only seen one other set for sale in the past and it was red sparkle. It's interesting they popped up in what used to be my back yard when lived on the North Shore. Gave up and took up residence on the North Shore of FL. :)

[QUOTE=ARCHxANGEL;368789]Yea, I was mainly gonna go out there for project drums. Wasn't looking for any MIJ or American in specific. But figured if I could get a good load it would be worth it.

Jay if you send me a p.m. with a list of what would be good project drums for you I will keep a sharp eye peeled for you

Not only as it pertains to Al Drew's but other sources as well

Hey Mitch, glad to see you pal

Yes just exactly like they sit hehehe

Hello gantro thanks for the heads up on Tommy P

I suppose it is not all that big of a deal in this case

but great to know who to speak with

should a larger typographical blunder occur somewhere down the line, as most likely it will ^5's

Hello again R.Adam McHugh

Oh heck yes I really love all the pearlescent wraps

I have BDP and wmp and red marine and now blue

I have some MIJ shells that are stripped of the wrap

as it was in terrible shape ..I was thinking

a nice greenish marine pearl which you do not see very often for those

I will be sure to post some pictures

after I have loved up on those drums a little

I can't wait to get my hands on them with all that duct tape residue

Hello again Dan Boucher

I know I already mentioned this but I sold home electronics for Lechmere here in Warwick R.I. until they were bought out by Montgomery Ward and shortly thereafter went out of business

of course this was the early nineties

I never knew that they at one time sold these little stencil kits

by the time of my employment with Lechmere

they carried no instruments at all

I took the ride to Salem Mass this morning to pick up these LaBoz drums

You know how in most cases the drums are not quite as nice as they seem in the pictures?

Well in this case it was just the opposite these drums are in fantastic original condition

The Blue marine pearl is in awesome brilliant condition and all five drums do have the LaBoz badges

As soon a I got home I took only the 13" tom out of the car (it was a mess}

and while watching the final period of the Bruins/Rangers game

I started cleaning off a huge amount of super-hardened duct tape residue with some goo gone

a clean rag and my thumbnail man was that tape residue stubborn

But after an hour and a half I did manage to get it all removed

Such nice badges on these drums but for whatever reason

when sitting behind the kit with the 12" to the left and the 13" to the right

Only the 13" drum has the badge faced out

What's worse is the rail consolette style mounting system the most God-awful design for double mounted toms ever

along with the usual problem of the ends of the two opposing bayonet posts interfering with one another

making it impossible to draw the toms close together

on this kit there is a non-original replacement of one of the spade mounts

in fact I do not think it started out as a spade mount for a drum at all (3rd pic)

The two upright portions (pictured to the left, in my second pic below)of the brackets are both quite short

making it impossible to position the 13" drum straight and relatively level

without the tom completely bottoming out on the bass drum the 12" drum just makes it

a longer version of this same part would be great for correcting the 13"

as only by cocking it up on a funny looking angle can one avoid the bottoming problem with the 13"

For now I did as I have done with a few of my other kits with double toms mounted on a rail

I removed one of the bayonet mounts from the rail completely

and went with just the single 12"drum up in this case, with the badge facing inward unfortunately

Also as mentioned one floor tom leg is missing but what I did not know before hand was that

missing also are the wing nut, threaded eye bolt, and a small square chrome plated piece with a hole in the center,

Which all together. works to secure the missing floor tom leg firmly to the leg bracket

All in all a very nice original Japanese made drum kit with some just as original badly designed mounting issues

I may have a spare MIJ floor tom bracket, or three if you want to swap them out.

Haha! That longer, homemade rod/spade piece might help with the 12" placement. The diamond mount looks vertically centered; you could flip the drum and have the badge out front, if upside down. In the end I guess taller uprights are needed.

I have posted a picture of a solution for the meantime...:)

Kenwood,

Lechmere Sales was also in Cambridge during the mid-to-late 60's and right across the street from the Lechmere stop on the T's Green Line. It is long gone now with all the new Cambridge Galleria in that area now. I bought my set with all the hardware and cymbals in one box for $225. A Gretsch with hardware and no cymbals was retailing for about $600 for a Progressive Jazz kit. Couldn't scrape up that kind of $$ back then so the MIJ was my route in.

The tom mounting system wasn't good. I moved away from using two toms immediately. I always played it as a 22,13,16 with the matching snare. In that way, I was able to get a decent position for the single tom. As I recall it, I moved one ratchet mount all the way to the left (from the drummer's position) and that just about left the bottom hoop of the 13 clear of the mount. Because the mount was top dead center, it was a tricky arrangement. The other aspect of conflict was the cymbal arm mount conflicted with the right-hand tom, which added to my reason for setting aside the 12" tom.

Yes indeed... 'tis true! Only the mod/webmaster can change and/or edit out titles, etc. I just saw this now, so I shall make it so. Goes without saying, the actual content CAN be edited by the OP, but not the main title...
