No Bearing Edges!!??!!

Loading...

Couple summers ago I picked up a MIJ snare and 20" bass drum in red sparkle for $50. The bass drum was single lug and had a crown badge on it. Upon taking the crown badge off though, you can clearly see where an original badge had been. The original was a small circle though, not the long Crown. What really has me though is today I decided to take them out, clean them up, and add them to my 60's Tempro kit. Upon taking the snare apart - it has no bearing edges! Nor a trace of ever having had any. I'll snap a few photos later, but has anyone else seen this? It doesn't look as though someone replaced the re-rings at any point which could explain lack of edges.

I just picked up a Hoshino kit last night and noticed the edges are just flat. Hoshino are pretty much bottom of the barrel from this vintage in my (limited) experience but this kind of backs that up. The kit was free (won it in an auction for around $35 but seller refused to take my money when I went to collect) but I really don't want to mess around cutting edges. I think edge profiles were deemed unnecessary for a kit at this level.

I think I'll leave them as is. I can do bearing edges, but I'll make sure it has snare beds. If it sounds good I'll leave it, if not, then I'll give it the edge it needs, lol. Thanks Fayray!

I suggest to both of you to cut some edges on those. I would, as I have had MIJs edges cut before.....really allows them to sing & come to life!

Just my $.02.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Exactly! You'd be surprised how well these MIJ's can sound with a decent edge. Good luck...and post some pictures!

I actually started putting edges on the snare tonight. But I got some photos of the non edges before hand. Where the snare strainer attaches had a slight crack in the wood. So I took two small pieces of wood ( one interior, one exterior ) and glued them onto the shell and used tack nails once the glue was dry.

Keep in mind that earlier Rogers drums had what was essentially a flat edge. May have been find with calf heads. May not be so good with today's plastic ones.

My biggest issue is that the heads literally were stuck on. So chances are it was fine with calf skin since there was more play with the head.

With bearing edges the heads don't stick and holy cow does this snare sing! I think It's a new favorite in the arsenal.

In another thread I noticed Kenwood make mention of not having noticed non bearing edges before. Honestly I thought this drum had them - albeit small. I was blown by the non existence of them. Every MIJ snare I've encountered has had them. Even if they were, well not great. The MIJ's haven't given up all their secrets yet.

Hello ARCHxANGEL I decided to move these comments below

from burtrocket's thread one to avoid thread drift there

and two because it applies more here on yours

There are differing levels of build quality with the Hoshino made drum kits

depending on the " model" for lack of a better term

I have some little six lug kits that have plastic bass drum hoops

even the gauge of the fastening hardware can vary on lug casings that outwardly are identical in appearance

depending again on their planned application

I am hoping the existence of factory bearing edges

is also a variable depending on the build

and not something characteristic to the entire Hoshino line

This "no bearing edges " thread really got my attention

I will be checking all of my Hoshino made kits

to see if they do or do not have bearing edges crude though they still may be

as is often the case with many of these little stencils no matter the maker

But no edges at all? ...........this I did not notice

I will admit I am not really an edge guy and that most of the kits I have

were mainly purchased because of how they look

rather than how I might be able to make them sound.
