No Bearing Edges!!??!!

Loading...

This was a first and I'm still in a little bit of shock. I've come across good and not so good MIJ drums. Typically they fall into a certain range and I get what I expect. Every so often I'll find a gem and be taken back by the build quality. But this one baffled me. And the badge it had ( though missing before I got it ) was of oval shape. I can still see the glue residue on the finish.

Fayray - any chance you can get a few photos of your flat edges? Curious if they were identical to mine.

Here you go. All the drums are like this. This is the 13" tom.

Yep, That's what the snare looked like. Looks like the only difference I can see is my snare has the re-ring and it doesn't look like your tom does. But it terms of MIJ, that's not saying much, lol

Anybody who knows kent drums has seen various levels of bearing edge care. I bought a set this summer and the 15x15 has almost no bearing edge on the bottom. It's like they forgot or were in a hurry or something cause the rest of the set at least has them cut. I haven't checked how true they are but this may be my first foray into cutting edges if I can learn to use a router. The drum sounds good the way it is but i bet it could sound better.

Gorgeous Kit. I have a 60's Kent kit myself. 20" Bass,12" Tom and 14" Snare. Fantastic sounding drums before they started buying MIJ shells as the company was going under.

From Kenwood

But no edges at all? ...........this I did not notice I will admit I am not really an edge guy and that most of the kits I have were mainly purchased because of how they look rather than how I might be able to make them sound.

Kenwood - I predict that over the next couple years, you will enjoy discovering the sound potential of these drums you have.....unless you never intend to play them at all, which IMHO would be silly. I have always liked the idea that I would have a choice of what kit to take to any given gig. Sometimes color makes a significant difference in terms of how it/you will fit in to the band/gig. Prime example is my RBS/TEP Whitehall kit used for the typical country/blues material in this part of the country I am currently in (North Dakota).

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hello John you may be right about that pal

I am starting to think that few, If any at all, of the Hoshino made drums

are cut for bearing edges

Here we have a blue sparkle Crown mounted tom with eight lugs per side

Making it in my opinion as deluxe a Hoshino shell, as one might find

Note the complete lack of a bearing edge

It is virtually the same as all the other examples posted

I am partial to these Hoshino drum kits

so this may serve to make me an edge guy after all

What size tom is that 14"? And I guess no edges were far more common than I ever thought.
