Question about premier 60s brass snares

Loading...

From Olddrumgeek

Now you mention it I heard someone playing a wood royal ace somewhere on you tube and it was one of the very best sounding snares I've heard.

Nice white one just come on e-bay and as Kitchens was indeed a music store in Leeds from the Northern area too:

Cheers I've just pulled the trigger on it - hope I like it! I have another question about the 60s brass or metal one in the shop, the seller has described it as quote: ' I think it's probably a royal ace but it hasn't got the flow bar'. Is there such a thing?

converted Royal Ace maybe? There is the Hi-Fi but I'm not sure that was available with a COB shell. A photo will clear it up.

*correction, the Hi-Fi was available in brass. Later they were aluminium. And wood of course. The Hi-Fi has a simpler standard strainer.

Thank you for putting it in a bit more perspective I realy appreciate it. Well it might be worth a run over to see what it is. I heard a hi Fi model on you tube don't know if it's an accurate sound but it sounded amazing. I actually resolved not to buy any more stuff as money situation is NOT good but now I'm in in it for another 2 snares AND a meinl traditional ping ride that I may have to send back and swap if not right!!CryBaby I would like a good cob snare though.:p

I think Premier always just described their snares as metal but I would suspect most of them in the 60's were COB with alloy and steel coming later and in the 70's.

A magnet will be the true test of the metal involved.

I agree it's probably cob but a magnet will only confirm or rule out steel. If the magnet doesn't stick you'll know it's not steel but it still could be brass or aluminium...or wood

Don't aluminium either. Supra's and acro's are this - anything but steel for me. Steel drums just seem too harsh sounding to me no character or tone. Magnet test it will be.

Brass is still my favourite though.

I have two 2000 snares and they are very dry but record well , the COB are better though and have a nice tone as does the wooden (birch with beech rings) Royal Ace.

Thanks for all your fine help on vintage premier. Today I received the wood royal ace, and yesterday the metal premier. A magnet didn't stick, and a heavy drum too so COB. Here are pictures.[Attachment: 90161]. My 'trademark' lopsided pics. With a 'lil picture of me!
