Question about premier 60s brass snares

Loading...

I have the chance to see ( on a part exchange deal) a 1960s premier 5/12" brass snare drum, ( chrome over brass I suppose?) can the experts tell me which models these were in and how good they are etc if you can give as much information as possible I would gladly appreciate it.

I have two Premier Royal Ace 60's COB snares a 14x5.5 and a 14x4 and they are both fab. Not sure if the other snares in the range were COB or steel but of it has a throw like this one then it is a Royal Ace:

Note that is my 14x4 and has the smaller lugs but the 14x5.5 will have the art deco lugs with the same badge and throw, the magnet test will confirm that it is chrome on brass.

Hope this helps and as you are just down the road you are welcome to pop over to see mine and have a chat.

I'm hoping it might be a royal ace, but I've no idea yet. Will find out tommorow. Yes that is great that you live nearby, I wouldn't mind calling at your place sometime I could show you my 2 radio kings......

Almost certainly will be a Royal Ace if COB. I believe wires are tricky to get so make sure they are in ok shape.

I have a wooden Royal Ace too and they can be still had for reasonable money!

Pure sound do a set of wires but they can run around £40 a set!

Gary it's supposedly coming to wills drum shop ( Sunderland) tommorow. I only went there to buy a cheap cymbal stand and ended doing a part ex on my supraphonic which I could never get to sound right ( always buzzy and uncrisp) on a worldmax black dawg plus cash. When I got it home I realised it wasn't the brass model which sound great but a harsh sounding steel one. So I'm in limbo and will have to see what comes in. I'm just wanting a good sounding drum not collectability.

Now you mention it I heard someone playing a wood royal ace somewhere on you tube and it was one of the very best sounding snares I've heard.

All my Royal aces sound very good and they each have their own character, the 2000 is different again so it is good to have them as well.
