1965 Rogers Buddy Rich Celebrity's

What a beautiful kit, I want one! I love that theatre, must be great to play in places like that, we play in dingy bars and a lot of outdoor gigs lately. Neither of which have nice acoustics, especially for drums.

JR!

THANK YOU!, and glad you enjoyed! You wrote "I want one"... indeed! A full set of 60's era Cleveland Buddy Rich Celebrity's in WMP are not easy to find! Doesn't mean they are not out there of course!, but it's gets tougher and tougher to find these, and a lot of times when you do, the seller has them priced into the stratosphere! If wrap isn't a sticking point, it can be easier though. The BR Celebrity model was available in EVERY wrap, and I have seen many that were not WMP. Same drums, same great Rogers build/sound... just not WMP. That said, a friend of mine was trying to sell his Fullerton .. ( or they might have been Dayton's. I can't remember ) .. WMP BR Celebrity's on eBay a while ago, and he started at $4999.00. The drums were PRISTINE and beautifully restored, including the canister throne. No takers. It was worth that price all day long... but no takers. Last I knew, I "think" he sold them privately for a little less than $3000.00, but he sold the canister separately. Mine being Cleveland's, and 65's... are kinda rare. They don't seem to pop up much at all. Hang tight and keep your eye peeled JR! Be ready to POUNCE as soon as you see one you like!

Regarding the theater: You are one of the guy's here that gigs a lot!, and I think that's great!... and not that easy to do either based on just what there are for venue's to play. I am so blessed with the Sinatra Show as it's an actual show vs. a "club band" .. thus .. we get to play the slightly higher end venues, dates, etc. A lot of these are paid seating which just blows me away. But, "Frank" is very good, he connects with the audience, and they love him. The backing band is very good too!, so you put it all together and we end up doing a lot of these type venues, plus get paid. We just did a small club/bar two weeks ago. Just your typical club/bar, but the owner had seen us this summer at one of the outdoor shows we played, and had to have us in his club. It was a BLAST!, as the people were just great!, and he met our monetary compensation requirements, so we did the gig. Point being, it's ALL GOOD as long as you're making music, having a good time doing it, and getting compensated for your time/talents. I would say that YOU are doing just that! When you hit one with an exceptional stage and acoustics, it is indeed very special!

Great venue... And disgustingly beautiful kit... great acoustics must have been like the icing on the cake...

Was watching a TV doco on Frank last weekend... He reminds me of BR in a lot of ways... His own man..

Cheers

Tommyp!

As always, an incredibly beautiful Rogers Celebrity kit! When I used to play...a long time ago, in a Galaxy far, far away...there was nothing better than a venue with great acoustics. It just makes performing that much better! Thanks for sharing!

John!

Can't say that I have ever heard "disgustingly beautiful" ... but I like it! Many similarities between BR and Frank Sinatra, agreed! They were roommates when they were both on the Dorsey band! THANKS!!!, and glad you enjoyed!

Yes.. I made that one up... specially for your kit...

Frank had a bit of a run in with the press downunder... Known by many down here as "Crankie Frankie" thereon. I think he did some push & shove with photographers late in the piece & swore he'd never return here... Sure you know more about that than I though..

Cheers

TP,

Just noticed the snare drum. Is that a COB Powertone? I thought you used the WMP Dynasonic for the "Frank" gigs!

Mark!

You are correct sir! It is indeed a 1968 COB Powertone .. but .. not your normal run of the mill Powertone!, which is why I even have it. It has been said that Rogers built "some" steel or aluminum Powertones here and there .. ( and truthfully, it was their shell supplier/vendor that would have made the shells that way as Rogers outsourced for their metal shelled drums ) .. but, no one seems to have come up with one, well... excepting my friend JM who states he has had TWO, and should have kept them! Anyway...

... this particular drum was brought to my attention because the interior was NOT shiny/polished, but DULL SILVER like I have never ever seen on a Powertone prior, so I bought it thinking this just MIGHT be one of those elusive steel Powertone's. I bought the drum, and it was pretty wasted... all there mind you, but kinda nasty. The interior is indeed a DULL SILVER, looks like an Acrolite actually. I scraped away at the seam to see what the shell's make up really was and... it's BRASS! Hmmmmmmm. As to WHY it has that dull coating on it I don't know, and it IS factory/OEM. The interior has never been messed with, painted, etc. I figured oh well, I'll clean/polish and flip, easily getting back what I paid if not more as it would now LOOK so much better. I did exactly that, put on fresh heads, tuned 'er up, and said well, I might at least play it, just to hear it before I flip it. Well!...

... this Powertone sounds NOTHING like any COB Powertone I have heard or played. It's incredible! It doesn't have the bright/harsh COB typical Powertone sound that I have never cared for .. instead .. it is WARM and ROUND with snare response to die for! I freaked Mark. I gigged it the next weekend and it more than delivered. Sounds like my 1967 wood/WMP Dynasonic, but with the added CUT of a metal shell. So.... I have played a bunch of Sinatra Shows with this COB Powertone this summer, and it knocks me out every time. I'm still shocked. Is it that DULL SILVER interior??!! I don't know!, but... what a drum. I brought BOTH to the Concord, NH gig as it's great to have that option available. If the PT was a little "too much" for the room, I could switch to the wood/WMP Dynasonic... but never did. The PT sounded GREAT! So... sorry 'bout the length of this tome, but it was the only way I could "'splain Lucy" ! I'll attach a few pics AFTER I cleaned/polished as well as an interior shot of that DULL SILVER finish. Take a good look at the interior... Bizarre!

Tommyp!

Your explanations always make for great reading! Kinda like reading an excellent novel! You're correct about the "typical" sound of a Powertone. I have two COB Powertones; a 4-digit Cleveland and an early Fullerton. Both sound identical with that harsh/bright sound. Again, excellent drums, but not always the sound I was looking for.

Thanks for sharing about your special PT!
