Ludwig Drumheads and head options for a 60's ludwig

Loading...

What is the difference between the heavy and medium coated drumheads. Does anyone use the new ludwig drum heads? If not why? Also what heads would you put on a 60's ludwig super classic to get that 60's tone?

Really sorry about 20 questioning everyone.

The difference in the 'standard' between med and hvy are : med=1ply 10mil, hvy=2ply 7mil each. That's basically it. I do not use the new Luddy heads. Don't honestly know why. I guess I just never picked up a set. As far as sound...that is a can of worms. Experiment with many brands, many thicknesses, and many models. You will find the match that makes your kit sing to your ears. It is VERY subjective. Personally, I love the natural skin. Since I can't justify 500-600 dollars per kit to skin them with real quality calf skin, I play a conglomeration of head brands and models. That's what makes me smile for now. I'm actually ordering up a set of goat skin heads from Earthtone as a 'do-fer'. If nothing else, they will make nice reso heads. Good luck on your search. It's costly and actually quite educational.

Ludwig heads are rated differently than other drum companies. The HEAVY is equivalent to a Remo Ambassador and the Medium is the equivalent to a Remo Diplomat. That said, I suspect their plastics and coatings are different. I've had GREAT success with Ludwig Heavy Coated heads for batters, and I like the sound of them too. I use the uncoated white heads for the resos, they're awesome too.

I've used Ludwig heads on and off since the 1970's and they are every bit as good as all the other manufacturers, but like all of them, they too have their own sound.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with medium coated on batter and medium clear batter on bottom.

If you play anything more than jazz.....heavy would be the better all around choice....the mediums dent sooooo easily.
