Last question. Should I do heavy on top & Heavy clear on Bottom or heavy on top and medium clear on bottom? What will get more of a 60's tone?

Personally, I would lean toward a thinner bottom head. It's going to give you a more open and crisp and sensitive sound. That's my nickel's worth.

I've got heavy coated batters and medium coated as reso's on my Ludwig Hollywood kit right now......they sound good, but the toms kinda die out earlier than I like. If I was to do it again I'd use coated heavys for reso's for more sustain.......I want them to go to 11! LOL!

The 'thinner' bottom head was for the snare only. Thin on a reso tom is murder to the resonance.

Yeah, I found that out the hard way...lol! Think I might try and get some of Ludwig's 2-ply coated heads for the batters and use the regular heavy coated as reso's next time....

Okay, so I'm finally buying heads for the set because I found all of the parts. From what I have been told this is what I'm doing. Please tell me if I should change anything.

13 inch rack tom:Heavy Coated Batter, Heavy Clear Resonant

16 inch floor: Heavy Coated Batter, Heavy Clear Resonant

22 inch: Re-issue 60's Ludwig Head resonant, Heavy coated batter

Will this get the tone? If not what should I change.

Make sure the reso heads are not two ply heavies. That would kill resonance. Other than that, sounds great. Medium single ply resos usually work best with heavy or medium batters.

If you want a warmer more authentic tone, coated heavy for the resonant heads would have been a better choice.....
