I think it would be fine. It's going to give you a lower fundamental on the toms with a more limited sustain. If you were to use medium on both sides, it would open it up a bit more and increase sustain. It's all in what you want from the drums. I have Coated Amb on the batter and Ludwig Med Weathermaster on reso. I really like the combo. I tried gobs of different combos with differing manufacturers. This is what I came up with that maximized the tone and resonance. To my ears, this was the best. I have not tried the Evans J1 etched as of yet. I've tried pretty much everything else, though. Oh! ...and I haven't tried Renaissance as batters on this kit - Ludwig 71 Gold Sparkle.
