Well I finally go one of my kids drums covered. I used to tape method and the pressure sensitive part of the wrap also. These shells had the original wrap gone when I got them, I am ssure that any inperfections in the wood would show through this wrap. I didnt really want to prepare the shells to the point they were smooth as a baby's butt so i left the backing on the wrap, with the excwption of 1 1/2 inces off of each end of the wrap where it over laps. 1st I applied a strip of drummaker's killer hi bond tap to the shell where the warp would stick, i marked a 1 1/2" line on the back of each end of the wrap. I fitted the wrap laying the shell flat on the table and put a mark on the shell and wrap on the oppisite side of the shell of my starting point. I learned this by watching st drums you tube drum wrap video. Smoothed the wrap arund to my starting point, cut the 1 1/2" strip off of the back and stuck it to the hi bond tape. It stuck like "GLUE": lol then smoothed the other side around to my ending point and cut the 1 1/2" backing off and stuck it overlapping the wrap. It worked very well.

This is the smallest drum in the kit. It a 8" I put remo pinstrip on top and Ebony reso heads. Look at it compared to a 12" tom. I almost tightened the grommet to much, using my new killer grommet tool form kentucky drums. It made a little swirl wrinkle around the grommet, but not to noticable.

I am very pleased with the outcome so far.

Looking good my man!! So what's the scoop on the wrap? Do imperfections show through? How durable does it seem? Would it withstand getting bumped around a bit, or not?

Thanks and keep up the great work on this kit!!

I think this wrap is sort of fragile until you get it all on the drum and all the hardware back on the drum. you should be careful cutting the holes in the wrap for the lugs, mounts, vent hole etc... After I got it all put back together it looks like real wrap. I believe the hardware will protect the wrap somewhat. I wouldn't recommend this wrap for giggin', unless you have some nice cases. Im sure it will be fine for a drum kit thats gonna be here at the house. It was very easy to install after I made my plan and exicuted it. Honestly i am amazed of how this lil drum looks with all the hardware back on it. It looks and sounds as good as my 8" tama rockstar tom down at the jam hole. I recieved these shells as as a basket case. My brother found them in a dumpster, then he took them apart and kept all the pieces. He's going to be shocked when he sees the completed project.

Pretty impressive Poppy. The grommet install shows the weakness of the wrap. Seems like a very good option overall for the right drumkit.

The wrinkling around the grommet might be avoided if I stuck the whole piece of wrap to the shell. The pressure sensitive contact paper like wrap is still on the slippery backing. If it were stuck to the shell it may not wrinkle, My 3rd drum to cover was the bass and it didnt wrinkle.

I stayed home today to work on these. I have the bass drum and floor tom done, except im waiting on 2 13" hoops from drum maker and waiting on my paint to dry on the 16" wood bass drum hoops. My second tom gave me fits. The heads fit extremly tight causing the wrap to push down. I dremeled the inside rim of the head to make it fit a little looser. I may end up redoing that one. On my bass drum wrap i did it a little different. I trimed 1/2" of the backing off and stuck it back on untill installation. I wraped the drum then peeled the 1/2" strip out from under the wrap. At first I thought I screwed up major. The 1/2" edge of the wrap was a little loose and didnt stick down like i had hoped it would. Frustrated i got the ole heat gun out and experimented with a piece of wrap before I applied it to the drum warp. Well this did the trick. The wrap literally shrunk down and fit very tight around the edge of the shell. It shrunk almost like heat shrink tubing does. I was amazed and delighted. Ths was my best one yet. I will post pics of the bass and toms in a little while.
