I then did a quick sanding and clean up at the cracked joints to prepare for glue. They are now all glued up and I'll come back to them in a few days for patching, sanding and paint. I had to add the wood blocks on the sides to keep even pressure on the joints.

Since I had a little more time left, I went ahead and pulled all the chrome hardware for a Dawn bath. I'll clean and polish the shell while these soak for a while.

Good job. You know, I have never seen hoops split like that. What would cause that to happen?

I've seen that split before. I think it is just a matter of the glue drying out in the original seam or uneven tensioning that eventually put a bit of torque into the hoop. Given they both let go, I favor the former.

I wondered the same thing about the hoops. You are probably right about uneven pressure or something of that nature. There is no evidence of being dropped or abused.

The Dawn dish soap soak really does a great job of getting dirty, gunky chrome ready for polish. It takes much of the initial cleaning step out since all you have to do is dump the chrome in the soapy water overnight and wipe down and rinse the next day. Let them get good and dry and they are ready for polish. I picked that tip up here on a few different posts. This place is great!

I was able to do some polishing and assembly today between some other projects I have going and so far, I am very happy with the results.

I can't wait to refinish the hoops this week and see the bass drum complete! Not going to rush though, I want to give the glue on the repair plenty of time to set up.

The chrome and wrap on these looks almost new. There was only one scratch unfortunately on top of the bass shell that I can't get out. Luckily, this pattern hides it well.
