Camco restore

From Slingalud

Jeff, the 4 small holes on your bass drum look to me like the original mounts on your drum kit were not entirely Camco. To me it looks like the original owner might have ordered the kit virgin then installed a 1960s Ludwig Rail Mount and the Floor Tom Bracket on the Tom..Or had the tech at the shop where he ordered it do it...Brilliant, And Very Sturdy. I like it! Of course I've always been partial to the Ludwig rail mounts be cause they are minimalistic in design and hold incredibly well. I have brand spanking new, never used Camco floor tom leg brackets which as you can see in the photo fit perfectly. If yours has seen better days I would be happy to send you one if that's the mounting system that was originally used. Free of charge.

Thanks a bunch for the offer on the mount but I think the one I have is fine. However one of the floor tom leg mounts is pretty bad.

Thank you!

I am really starting to think what Singalud is saying is true. The holes that were drilled for the floor tom leg mount do not look factory, see pics. Those holes look crooked and rough compared to the muffler holes which are very clean and straight. And besides, my drum has holes for two mufflers, (one for each head), so isn't that a sign of a custom order?

Now the bass drum is different. I think it had a couple of different mounts in its life. It must have been virgin, there is defiantly no hole pattern that would fit the triangular mount and if it were the rail type mount then the large hole would have not been used.

I think I will take Singalus advice and use wrap from the hoop to plug the holes the best I can then call it good. Get it back to virgin style.

Thank you!

Jeff, hear me out.

If I had a Gemini outfit from 65, and I said it`s too big for my new place now, decided to make the kit smaller, I`d keep the a tom, BD, snare, HH and cymbal stands.

What I would have left to sell is a tom without a mount, a Floor, a BD with no mounts and a centered badge.

That is what you have there that I think someone added mounts, to the BD and tom after.

From what I can see, Camco never put mounts forward of the badge from the seat. You`ll have a Camco...??

You can with patience, (Front BD hoop sample for one inch hole) turn this into a Casino outfit, which they did put out, except it would have a Apple veneer. (and an extra ply of course)

Just my argument to ponder.

My bad, that`s supposed to read ...tom without a stand....

The Gemini had two virgin BD and two toms on a double holder stand.

The Gemini theory's a good one but you also said "From what I can see, Camco never put mounts forward of the badge from the seat." But they did - our Belgian friend Stedi's got one with a clearly factory installed triangle mount between the badge and the front hoop. The issue with Camco, as ever, is whatever you wanted you could get either from the factory or from your local drum supplier so there's endless minor variations on stuff like this and it kicks "collector orthodoxy" or what's "right" out the window.

Trick is to make them look good and play them a lot and that's about the best you can hope for. I think the rail mount idea with the Ludwig style "horn" into the existing "floor tom leg mount as tom mount" seems workable - then you've "just" got to fill that huge hole and attendant holes.

Still on topic, I think. Anyone seen it done this way? I lifted these off the bay.

Wow, they sure had some strange looking hardware. And it does not look very strong or sturdy at all.

Well, hopefully this weekend I will get to work on the kit.

You are correct David.

Especially when it comes to the position and the orientation of the triangle tom-mount and the badge, they’re seem to be quite some variations. On my clear maple Oaklawns, the mount is indeed placed forward of the badge from the seat. What is also peculiar on this particular set is that the triangle plate is not pointing forward. A little while ago, Steve Maxwell sold a gold moire set with the exact same configuration. The reverse orientation of the triangle tom mount plate can be seen on more 2-up sets, even one of the Camco catalogs shows a Blue Moire set like this.

Here is a question for ya, does the triangular plate require a large hole in the center for the post to adjust for height?

Any suggestions on the BD hoop? I have one that must be original because the inlay matches very good but the other is different. It has a gold sparkle inlay that had been painted black. So any chance I will ever run across a Camco hoop with silver sparkle inlay or should I use the hoop inlay for repairs as mentioned (great idea ) and maybe just get chrome inlay for both hoops? Just a thought! It will take more than a one inch piece of the hoop inlay to make all of the repairs, more like 8". So now I wonder if I just remove the inlay from the hoop, use what ever needed to fill holes, save the remaining inlay in a safe place and get chrome inlays for both hoops so they match. Then if I ever did get a Camco hoop with silver sparkle inlay I could re-install the inlay that was saved from the original hoop.

Thank you!
