Jeff -- On my 3 ply Slingerland 13/16/18/26 (Bonham-ish) I like coated Emperors on the batter side of the floor toms and bass. On the 13, a coated Vintage A. Clear A's on all the tom resos, and a coated A on the bass reso. Hope that helps...

Ya, that sounds close to what I am think about doing, only coated A's on the reso end. I take it yours sound killer!

Thank you!

Have you ever considered branching out into George Washington-era dental work? :D

LOL! no not really.

Sanded down the filler block this morning, it worked great. I must say I was inspired by Ryan vonR thread on his WFL project. He used a dowel to fill in an edge. That was what gave me the idea on how to fix my hoop, thank you Ryan vonR!

Now deciding weather or not to do an inlay strip of the zebra veneer or fill in the groove and veneer the entire hoop. It would look good either way.

What to do with these leftover veneer scraps?

Due to the fixing of the edges on the hoops and sanding off black paint my inlay groove became off center and not a uniform depth all the way around. Original plan was to fill in the groove and cover the entire outer surface with veneer. Got to looking at the scrap from trimming the shells and decided to use it for inlay. I think the natural maple along with the zebra inlay will look nice.

Hope to spray the shells in the next few days.

Thank you!

If the hoops were black, that inlay would really pop. Also I loved the idea and the way you repaired that hoop. Do you have a pic of the repair just after the block was removed? Or after removal and sanding, or both preferably. Also did you try a little tung oil or Danish oil on a scrap piece to see how it would darken and bring the grain out ?

Here is a shot of the hoop repair after sanding. I thought about black, but not for long. I don't get into the oils, they basically have the same result as my clear finish in the end, only I don't have to worry about adhesion troubles between the oil and the conversion varnish. Here is very close shot of a 1" wide strip of veneer that I shot some clear on the other day, it is laying on a piece of raw veneer.

Wow that repair is great! And yes, that clear coat darkened it up and brought out the grain. That's basically was what I meant. You definitely know what your doing. Those drums are going to look beautiful. Can't wait to see them with heads and hardware. I wonder how many hoops have been tossed like that because people had no clue they could be repaired?
