61' - 64' Ludwig Black Galaxy Kit

Loading...

From mlayton

here's another. john did this one. I originally had the Ludwig chrome over wood snare,4 ply. john wrapped it in some modern galaxy that he had leftover from my floor tom. I decided to make it look period and added a keystone badge,p83,cob hoops and all that good stuff. it sounds terrific and john did a great job on it. before and after here..mike

Mike, John...both kits look fantastic...that it one of my favorite wraps! is there a secret connection from where John picked up the modern Galaxy sparkle wrap? Is it somehow available to schmoes like me?

Dear Schmoe, LOL

I promised never to reveal 'how' I got the piece of wrap that I used to make Mike's floor tom, and later to cover the snare. All I'll say is; there are people with some serious pull that love Mike Layton. Mike always gives me the sole credit for that floor tom, but the truth is; it was a 'joint project' between a bunch of Mike's friends who all chipped in parts to help complete the drum. I built the thing and acted as 'coordinator' but a bunch of Mike's forum buddies all contributed 'something' to the project.

I will cut out my tongue before I ever reveal who got me the wrap. I gave my word. Mike knows how and who. He's the only one that ever needs to know.

So, no Mr. Schmoe... no way to get black galaxy wrap -anywhere- other than on Ludwig drums. You have no idea the hoops I had to jump through to get the piece I got. It's a bummer too! I'd buy some interesting orphans just to wrap them in it!

Damn...that's what I get for being a schmoe! Guess I'll need to keep my eyes (and wallet) open for my own vintage galaxy kit or buy a Legacy kit from Ludwig. Looks like I'm not ready to join the "Secret Order of Modern Galaxy Wrap" quite yet. Maybe some day...ha!

Aaron - Do you know if the modern black galaxy kits are popular? Do they sell well for Ludwig? Just curious.

I have no idea, John. I didn't even know you could order that wrap on a new Ludwig kit before I read it on here. I have not looked into it, but I did see a new black galaxy kit at Professional Drum Shop in Hollywood about a year ago. I guess some people know about it.

Mike, Lucky - Post a shot of your BG kit (and Mike's Pioneer) here! May as well have all our kits displayed in one place/thread! People come looking for Black Galaxy, they can find both iterations here, vintage and modern versions.John

beautiful kit rick!!

no-john gives ME way too much credit. he did all the grunt work and leg work and made it happen. the drum and everything and everybody that went into means a ton to me..

aaron-when galaxy was reissued a few years ago, it was exclusive to three dealers a that time. Bentleys and forks were two of them. the third one eludes me at the moment. so, there aren't a ton of the new galaxy drums out there. I ordered a canister throne from Bentley for my kit. Ludwig has quit making canisters now, so i'm glad I did.

ive also never seen any individual drums for sell other than snares..

KC - Thanks for posting shots of your kit!!! It's a gem! The snare drum is a killer isn't it? I have the same one (4"x14") and it really surprised me. I'm having a ball playing mine. Is your floor a 14"?

If so, I have deep floor tom envy.

Mike - The third place was in LA/Cali somewhere. It's been a few years and the THC damage to my brain synapses won't allow me to retrieve the information. LOL

john you got to go crazy so many drums to play ....and so sweet.....

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Gary - 20+ years ago when I was gigging a couple of times a week, I only had one kit! It was an early 70's black cortex 13", 14" floor tom, 16", 22" w/ 60's Acrolite and a Supra that I alternated with.

Now, I'm home sitting on my duff with no gigs booked, but I have kits and snares (out the ying-yang) to choose from that would make any drummer drool.

Daily, I entertain Bev, myself, the cat, the bird and few stink bugs with the sound of classic vintage drums!

Ah, Life! :p
